The clear and detailed pic of the 01 prototype (1st flight in 1998) really shows a remarkable similarity with the eventual serial planes and debunks convincingly any theories about having been an enlarged LAVI clone. Indeed it is quite interesting that more and more detailed facts about J-10 development history are currently revealed in mainland articles. But after all some tricky questions remain:

1. The gap between the start of the project in 1984/88 and successful first flight in 1998 is far too long indicating severe problems of undisclosed nature.

2. Keeping mum about the pace and nature of the israeli tech transfer indicates that China was probably not very satisfied with the results. May be Tel Aviv was forced clandestinely by Washington in the early 90´s to reduce the scope of assistance or supply only inferior sytems/tech data to the chinese? :D (just look at the Phalcon and Harpy sagas again!)

P.S.: The rumours about one or two J-10 prototypes flying (and also crashing!) already in 1995-97 could be a hint that these planes were actually ´technology demonstrators´ not intended to be real protos. Did J-10 TD´s really exist or are they pure fantasy ?

What is your analysis dear experts (esp. crobato and deino:D )?

Best regards Violet Oboe

The uplink is not an antenna but a button shaped device just behind the canopy. You will only see it with J-10s built this year (2006) but not in any of the older pics. They resemble the GPS receivers used in Israeli F-16s.

On the J-10 01 prototype, I have been saying for years that 01 does not resemble any Lavi but straight out looks almost exactly like the finished planes.

As far as I know, no technology demonstrator actually exists. In the history of Chinese aviation its actually quite rare to see a technology demonstrator other than something using an existing aircraft like the J-8 ATC, and more often than not, prototypes often closely resemble their finished counterparts and don't display the same kind of variation TDs in the USSR and the USA have compared with their finished forms. Consider there is no picture of such surfacing even after the project has now been declassified.

The official declassification will also mean many buried pictures of J-10s that are kept away from forums in the past will now resurface for no fear of police retribution. This may give us more clues about the plane's recent history.

Does anyone have an idea, why the J-10 was declassified only now !!???

The question really is why didn't they declassify it sooner. At least two months ago would have meant showing the plane off in Zhuhai.

I was hoping for some pics showing the J-10 with laser guided missiles anyone has those pics. I would like to ask a question will the J-10 become like the F-35 I mean being mass produced in China and also sold to other friendly countries. It would cost so much less and this plane is the right plane at the right time.

Happy New Year to all members of the forum. I am a new comer to this informative discussion board.

It might be consider a little bit off topic. But IMHO, the declassification of J-10 and the publishing of national defense white paper by PRC a couple of days ago was trying to convey some kind of political message to Taiwan, before CSB giving his presidential speech on Jan. 1st, 2007.
It's well-known that the ruling DPP party has been trying to push for a 'new' Taiwan constitution before 2008.

The announcement came days after J-10s made their first appearance near the Taiwan straits, soaring towards Matsu in order to get SAM radars to light up. So I guess yeah, they're both trying to send a message and including one saying, "we're finally here to party".

It certainly won't be the last.

What in the hell are anti-gravity weapons?

I got this from India Daily:

Jian-10 -China's new fourth genaration fighter aircraft injected in Chinese Air Force - equipped with anti-gravity weapon systems?
Media Release
Dec. 31, 2006

The Chinese air force has been equipped with the Jian-10, Chinese air force sources said, Xinhua reported Dec. 30. The rumor among the think tanks is that China euipped these with lethal anti-gravity missile technologies.

Russian involvement in the J-10 program was not limited to the AI-31FN turbojet engine, but also included offers for advanced multifunction radars, navigation and targeting systems, ECM suite, and missile warning and defense systems. For the J-10, the Chinese will most likely adopt the Phazotron RP-35 "Zhemchug," which is an X-band radar with digital fire-control sensors and an electronically scanning phased-array antenna. The radar features a liquid-cooled travelling wave tube transmitter; an exciter; a three channel microwave reciever and programmable signal and data processors. All critical radar controls for "Zemchug" are integrated into the aircraft's throttle grip and stick controller, and radar data is displayed via the head-up and head-down displays allowing for one-man operation.

Military analysts have known for some time about the existence of the plane, which is China's newest domestically designed and manufactured fourth-generation fighter aircraft. China's State Council released a white paper on national defense Dec. 29.
