Don't get too excited about this. All it tells us is that byd is not stupid and will do deals and jvs on its terms. The fact that they out maneuvered Indian govt on that 1000 ebus order should tell you that byd is no dummy. Don't assume you know more about what's good for byd than wcf and his people. They are top notch. Now, byd just needs to decide if they want to sweeten the offer or deal with higher tariffs.

Btw, they are doing really well in Uzbekistan

Story here on china pursuit of Afghanistan lithium sector.

Chinese government doesn't even need to do anything as Republicans would make sure any deal between Ford and CATL get crushed.

why would Chinese govt not want Chinese business to succeed in America? Day after day, I come to this forum and people are here are always concerned that these business are going to get taken advantage of. That they can't take care of themselves.

If these businesses are such wall flowers and need your protection, they don't deserve to stick around.

There is short term interest, long interest, national interest, and corporate interest. Chinese government doesn't need to interfere with how companies engage and invest in the world. However, it doesn't mean the Chinese government should do nothing when national interest is at stake. For example, Trump forced Bytedance to sell TikTok and Zhang Yiming was forced to agree but the Chinese government came out and said no. That is a good example when Bytedance might be willing to accept a forced sales when it is desperate.

Same thing with CATL or BYD, there are nothing wrong with them for investing in the US or India. It is just that these companies might be willing to take enormous risk for a good return. Chinese government is there to make sure that whatever they give up doesn't affect national interest.

More examples are Wanda, HNA and Anbang which recklessly borrowed money from Chinese banks and invested in the West. Chinese government put a stop of such practice and save China from a massive bailout later.

It is not the responsibility for the Chinese government to protect businesses in everything but it is the responsibility for the Chinese government to ensure national interest is protected from systemically important businesses from causing a havoc because of greed.

They're concerned about accidental or forced technology transfer that would compromise CATLs overall advantage in the battery field, and by extension China's.

This is not wholly irrational. After all, leveraging FDI as a means of technology transfer is something China massively took advantage of from the early 80's through the 12th FYP, and has been a major factor in its success. So there is definitely reason to believe that it is effective.

However, unlike the big Japanese and later American corporations of that time, CATL is not so desperate for decent returns that it will willingly compromise its IP to get them. Also, Beijing has a much higher degree of control over outward FDI than the US or Japan, so it would prevent CATL from carrying out such an investment if that were to happen.
