Electric Viking mentioned this on YouTube a few weeks ago. Considering Atto 3's safety ratings elsewhere, one wonders if Australia is in an ivory tower when it comes to safety issues or the geopolitical perch Down Under.

Yes we have an advanced safety bureaucracy and regulatory bureaucracy in general. Consider that Australia is one of very few locations in the world to legally mandate that bicycle riders wear a helmet. Honda's new HR:V is sold here as a four-seater rather than a five-seater for the same reason as the Atto 3 is being held up. One can question the wisdom of these regulations but I don't believe their application is an anti-China thing.

MG (SAIC brand) is the #7 automotive brand here by 2022 sales year-to-date. If the government wanted to go after Chinese manufacturers, they would start there.

The whole distribution process is botched. There is no way that EV Direct didn't know about Australian compliance rules.

I think a lot of prospective buyers here would prefer BYD manage the distribution arrangements themselves.

Interestingly, SAIC has two ex-British brands here in MG and LDV. The latter is managed via a third-party distributor. MG has gone from strength to strength in recent years, finishing 9th in sales here for 2021 and on track to finish 7th in 2022. Meanwhile LDV has stalled around 17th. Now, LDV arguably has less potential for growth given its limited product offerings (utes and vans) but it's also relevant that they received a lot of negative publicity about a year ago when a court ordered the cost of an LDV T60 ute to be refunded in its entirety owing to excessive rust. As a nascent brand seeking to earn public trust, the very last thing you want is an official court ruling that (a) your product is shit and (b) you treat your customers so terribly this had to be resolved in court. In retrospect it would've been much, much better for LDV as a brand to have resolved this with the customer before it got to court, and one wonders if LDV being managed by an independent distributor had something to do with how it all unfolded.

Yang Wang (LookUp) series in the ultra luxury (800k+ RMB) providing unrivaled functionality/driving experience. This was supposed to be starry sky, but I guess that brand was already taken. This is covering a segment that only few could afford. I guess Model X/Y is also in this segment along with some other high end electric vehicles. The off roader is apparently the first car they will have in this segment.
It seems BYD's hardcore offroad 4x4 electric SUV will be available almost a year earlier than the Cybertruck, which won't enter production until the end of 2023.

BYD finalizes Chinese name for its premium car brand

The brand's official launch is expected in the first quarter of 2023, when its first hardcore off-road model will be unveiled.

Look how old these engineers are. I guess that's a problem for Japan's industries. In China, I think the average age of engineers is 30s for even the aviation and space industries.

I don't see that a 50% market share limit in China due to limited raw material supplies.

Based on BYD's targets of 280k/month in Dec 2022 and 5 million sales next year, you end up with a production increase of over 280k/month by Dec 2023. Given the trend of flat/declining auto sales everywhere, the BYD increase by itself pushes Chinese new car sales to 50% electric.

So what about battery production from the other manufacturers, such as CATL or Gotion?

Comments?
Yes, it probably won't be supply restrained. It will be demand constrained somewhat. I guess the NEV penetration rate probably will continue to grow, albeit at a slower pace, once the saturation reaches 50%.

There is no rumor on Chinese social media that Tesla will do further price cut. Remember that the first price cut triggered additional sales. It looks like that may have not generated enough sales increase, since they had to bring back the free insurance sales pitch. Tesla makes very high profit on its Shanghai Giga production. I would not be surprised if they cut even more to try to match BYD in China or in Europe. Also with the recent price cut, it sounds like there is some BYD Seal cars available in the standard range and high power version. LR is still all booked up.

NIO continues to lose money and lower guidance on delivery numbers for Q4. Until they get the basics right, it's crazy that they keep on touting new brand or getting into phone business.

Back to BYD, the Zhengzhou production base is continuing to expand at rapid pace. There are 6 phases. The first one finishes in April and the next 5 phases finish construction throughout 2023. Zhengzhou is going to be a huge car plant when fully up and running.

BYD electric bus J6 has started autonomous driving testing in Japan.

E6 cabs are being used in Zimbabwe airport. Atto 3 demand is off the hook in Australia. There is demand now for over 3000 cars a month and they are only able to deliver 2000.
