BYD is on the same level as Huawei and CATL as among the greatest Chinese hard tech companies (maybe you can throw DJI, JinkoSolar and Goldwind in there). And arguably, it has brighter road ahead than anyone. The company is so unbelievably well run and flexible. No one is as well set up to capture the green revolution as BYD. It's almost as if the past 15 years were all like a buildup For BYD to finally explode in the auto industry today.

Warren Buffett holds ~8% of BYD, perhaps the best investment ever for Buffett. He bought $232 million in 2008 and now worth over $6 billion.

I would add
  • Midea Goup - robotics
  • ZTE - telecommunications
  • Hikvision - surveillance

BYD's (OTCMKTS: BYDDY, HKG: 1211) much-anticipated Seal model is getting closer to its official launch, with its pre-sale set to begin later this week.

The BYD Seal will open for pre-sale on May 20, according to information shared by the largest Chinese maker of new energy vehicles (NEVs) on Weibo on Sunday.

The company did not provide more information, but the Weibo post came with a video showing all-around details of the model's interior.

BYD has warmed up the model several times in the past two months, releasing images of its exterior as well as its interior.
The company recently shared information that it will unveil its CTB (cell to body) battery technology on May 20.

BYD did not specify, but given that the technology was announced at the same launch as the pre-sale of the Seal model, it may mean that the Seal will be the first model to use the technology.

The Seal model, built on BYD's e-platform 3.0, is seen as one of the strongest challengers to the Tesla Model 3 in China.

Information released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology last month showed that the BYD Seal has a length, width and height of 4,800 mm, 1,875 mm and 1,460 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,920 mm.

For comparison, the China-made Tesla Model 3 has a length, width and height of 4,694 mm, 1,850 mm and 1,443 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,875 mm.

The Model 3 is currently offered in two versions in China, with the entry version priced at RMB 279,900 ($41,200) with an expected delivery date of 20-24 weeks and the Performance version priced at RMB 367,900 with an expected delivery date of 16-20 weeks.
Previous reports suggested that the BYD Seal could have a pre-sale price range of RMB 220,000 ($33,570) - RMB 280,000, significantly lower than the Tesla Model 3.

BYD Seal is probably the most anticipated new release from BYD this year. After the Dolphin being the first car to use e3.0 platform, this is the second one. According to social media posts, Seagull and Sea lion release might now be pushed back to next year. The production and demand for the existing models are too high. Apparently, Dolphin's March order was 30k and the delivery time was extended to 120 days.

Seal will be produced in a new factory in Changzhou. It will officially go on market in June (after the May 20 presale). Probably start low rate production in July and full scale production in August. This factory should be able to produce 20k a month no problem. Again, a lot of these new factories is what will enable BYD to hit 200k a month in deliveries later this year.

The unveiling of Seal is also extremely BYD like. They have CTB and ITAC announced just like a few days before the presale of Seal. Unlike other companies, they don't announce these really great new technologies until they are ready to go to market with them. It also uses a second generation motor system that can operate from -30 to 60 degree environment. In case you want to see what ITAC looks like. this is the 4 wheel drive version only.

a video of it. Just look at it, amazing stuff.

Wind resistance coefficient is only at .0.219, which is better than that of ET7 and Model 3. This makes car faster and more efficient in electric usage. CTB allowed the body of car to be 15 mm lower, which helped.

The marine series seems to be a newly designed series focusing on not just domestic but also international market. It's product line expands through numerous cars of cars. The design looks more trendy and cool than the dynasty series. Both the Dolphin and the Sea Gull will probably be what BYD uses to crack the lower priced global EV market in places like India and ASEAN countries. Seal looks like something they use to match up to Model 3 in more premium markets.

Of course, BYD doesn't really announce thins but in their product unveiling, they clearly showed here they are going to cover all the classes from A00 cars to pickup trucks (to be released second half of 2023)

Will come in both PHEV and BEV.

In less exciting product release news. A 5G version of BYD Song Plus DM-i got released on Friday due to the high demand. Seem like these are more like the year to year product updates.

On Denza D9's pre-sale opening today, they got 3000 orders in the first 30 minutes. Considering that the prices are higher here than on your normal BYD cars (about 335k to 460k RMB), that's not bad for 30 minutes. This maybe BYD's first foray into the luxury market. Keep in mind that Denza was a 50/50 JV between BYD and Mercedes from 10 years ago, it's quite amazing that now BYD has taken over this project almost completely (90% control). Looks like Mercedes is just content on making some money off their original investment. This is a definitely a seminal moment as China's own automaker has now overtaken the Germans in the domestic market.

Now, I actually don't think D9 MPV is as good of a value proposition as Seal. I would expect their first pickup truck and luxury sedan under their own brand (maybe in the marine series) to be much better deals to get. I do think the release of D9 and Seal will continue to catapult BYD into higher brand conscious level. From what I can see online, the more people buy BYD cars and are satisfied, the more people will be interested in buy BYD cars. It makes sense, since cars are often a very emotional decision made based on various factors, including what people around you drive. There is probably a multiplying effect going on right now with BYD. It's only been really doing well for the past few months, so the effect of reputation gains from models like Han series or Song series are only going to help their sales going forward.

As much as I like XPeng and Nio, I think they need to move faster in expansion if they do not want BYD to move into the luxury space and take large part of their planned market segment.

I really liked a video from the electric Viking today
here is the article it referred to

I don't dislike Japan, but I'm always excited to see Chinese industries crush Japanese ones. Japan is really dependent on its automakers to keep economy afloat. They have worked hard to suppress domestic EV demand. But since Japan depends on exports, this is a really bad strategy. They also made a good point that Japan was a leader in semiconductor and home appliances, but have now fallen behind to other East Asian countries. Also, there are well known demographic problems in Japan. I see Japan as a continual shrinking power going forward. That will have an interesting affect on geopolitics in the region.
The article didn't talk about South Korea. Hyundai has certainly been putting out some EV models. I saw the battery pack technology of Ionique vs Seal today and Seal's CTB technology is much more advanced. I think China will really crush South Korea before they get to Japan's current position. Again, I don't know what kind of effect that will have on geopolitics. Will be interesting to see.

What would a 10% drop in GDP for Japan and South Korea do to the balance of power in East Asia? Interesting to watch.

I wonder with future ubiquitous charging infrastructure, would plug in hybrid military vehicles with IEP be the next leap in ground combat evolution?

Pros: can run off existing oil logistics, but has flexibility of running off the grid or distributed solar when necessary, more fuel efficient than normal vehicles, silent and IR stealthy because they don't need to run engines while idling but can instantly power up and go into combat mode from the battery, more electrical generation capability for special mission vehicles like EW, radar or laser, simplified transmission if go with IEP and series hybrid.

Cons: battery packs can explode when hit (but see BYD blade battery), more complex transmission if go with parallel hybrid. Battery exploding can also be a plus as a built in self destruct to prevent capture by enemy.

An absolute drop of 10% of GDP is not realistic in Japan and Korea. But future GDP being 10% smaller than it would be otherwise, yes.

If I look at Japan specifically, they do about $80 Billion in automotive exports per year. If trends continue and Japanese companies don't go electric, they are going to lose those exports and start being an net importer of automobiles, batteries, etc

In the long-term, Japan would then have a current account deficit of $100 Billion per year, just from autos/batteries. Presumably they would start running down their overseas assets and eventually start importing capital.

But where are they going to be importing capital from? The biggest saver and source of capital would still be China.

Seems like my fears about Leapmotor's brand was unwarranted
The Leapmotor C01 has some advanced technology called CTC (cell to chassis), which integrates the batteries with the chassis, and eliminates a separate battery pack.

The development of China's EV industry is explosive in recent years. Japan's auto industry had their glory days, but the baton is being passed to China.
