Frankly I don't think those behind this contest have a clue. One of the objectives of this contest is to make a movie that can be shown internationally. Do they think having American writers write attracts an audience? The screenwriter is at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to the creative end of Hollywood filmmaking. The only people that would be motivated to watch a movie based on who wrote it are other writers. Set in Beijing and reflects the city's culture sounds very art house niche audience to me.

The only screens you can write in 3 days are bad ones unless you already have one mostly written that can you tweak and polish to fit the criteria. I assume the organisers gave a lot more time than 3 days and we only just heard about it now?

The contest was announced less than two months ago. I wrote a feature length screenplay under deadline for an independent production company from start to finish in less than two months. Be in mind since then I wrote two more drafts after getting notes from the producers.

I found the website. Not sure when the next competition is but probably at least annually if this one shows promise. Well apparently if you guys can write 5-11 page synopsis in two days that's good enough.

I would love to write for a Chinese studio but the rules maybe too restrictive for my way of writing. I basically cannot write a Chinese period peace which seems the rules only allow.

How's this for a Beijing script:

COMPETITION: Feature Film
TITLE: First, Do No Harm (勿害位先)
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Wang Yiting is a nanny for Zhang Kun, a wealthy Beijing surgeon. Yiting’s daughter seems sick. Kun diagnoses it as liver cancer, but Yiting can’t afford a transplant. Out of desperation, she robs a truck delivering fresh human organs to get a liver and takes Kun’s family hostage to force him to perform the surgery. Inspector Wu is tasked with defusing the situation, but discovers Doctor Zhang is deeply involved in illegal organ trafficking. Can he keep everyone from getting hurt, while unmasking the truth behind Doctor Zhang? Can Yiting save her daughter? Can Doctor Zhang save his family and his career?

Yeah. Got any ideas?

I'm thinking of a sci-fi military thriller about a Chinese submarine crew being frozen for preservation for rescue at a later time in the deep ocean after they and an adversary sub (Japan or US) exchanged torpedoes at each other. The captain pull the all necessary switch to help save as many crew members as possible since the sub is sinking and their emergency ballast release tanks has been destroyed. The details about it how it works can be said later. Finally after finding the sinking sub at the bottom of the sea the rescue were able to raise it and retrieved the frozen crew members (some are in parts therefore can't be revived). The crew than will go through a delicate process of not only bringing their body back to life. It's so difficult that only a handful were able to survive and successfully brought back to life. Why do this you might ask? Well since China has it's one child policy, parents with one and only child in the PLAN is KIA is unacceptable. As the few survivors finally awake from their frozen nap they went through a difficult phase trying to remember who they really are. Oh by the way, there will be a scene with the Laoning and J-15s and J-31s launching off the ramp and stuff, plus a few beautiful PLAN female sailors for eye candy as well. The surviving sailor (main character) got reassign to an air craft carrier. Although he marvels at the CVN over all power, he is still skeptical about it's vulnerability, he is a submariner after all. Mean while his old pal from the military academy is a J-31 pilot did not take his pessimistic view too kindly. This film will be a high tech thriller with the question comes to mind as whether surface ships or submarines are better.

Well that's the basic plot. What ya think?
