Among the numerous movies I intend to watch between now and the end of the year, the following one looks very, very good. So good in fact, I created

MOVIE: Jack Ryan (2013)

Jack-Ryan-01.jpg

Title:: Jack Ryan, Moscow
Genres: Action, Drama, Suspence, Thriller
Rating: PG-13
Opening: December 25, 2013
Producer: Lorenzo di Bonaventura (All Transformer movies, both G.I. Joe movies)
Director: Kenneth Branagh (Thor (2011), Henry V (1989) - Nominated Best Director Academy Awards, Won Best Director BAFTA)
Starring:
- Chris Pine (Jack Ryan)
- Keira Knightley (Cathy Ryan)
- Kevin Costner (William Harper - CIA)
- Kenneth Branagh (Viktor Cherevin - Villian)
- David Paymer (U.S. Diplomat)

Plot Summary:
This story is not based on any of Tom Clancy's novels, which follow the life of Jack Ryan from being a young CIA analyst to ultimately becoming the President of the United States. The story does, however, fit chronologically into the book series between "Patriot Games," and, "Without remorse." In the film, Jack Ryan (Pine) serves as a covert CIA analyst in a position as a financial consultant for a Russian billionaire, Vikto Cherevin (Branagh). Ryan discovers that Chevren and the Russian government are planning a terrorist attack aimed at collapsing the U.S. economy. But Chevren and the Russians, in turn, find out that Jack knows, and Ryan ids forced to go on the run in Moscow and Russia. Once on the run, Ryan find himself in a race against time to prove his innocence, prevent the attack, and also rescue his wife, Cathy Ryan (Knightley), after she is kidnapped by Cherevin. Ryan is ultimately assisted by William Harper (Costner), who is on station in Moscow with the CIA. Together, using a high ranking U.S. diplomat (Paymer), they attempt to organize and coordinate efforts to stop the attack.

The film has an alternate title, "Moscow," and is the first movie involving Jack Ryan that is not based directly on one of Tom Clancy's novels. The screenplay is written by Adam Cozen (who worked from a previous draft by Hossein Amini) and will incorporate certain character details and plot elements from Clancy's other Jack Ryan books into the plot line. The overall story is similar to a story called, Dubai, a script written by Cozen in 2007, which also involved an American citizen trying to stop a plan to devastate the U.S. economy.

Summary:
Given the actors, the director, the producer, and the story-line, this should be an excellent re-boot of the Jack Ryan story. Having read all of the Tom Clancy books, and seen all of previous Jack Ryan movies which starred Alec Balwing (1990 - Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (1992 - Patriot Games, 1994 - Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (2002 - The Sum of all Fears), I can say that I am personally looking very forward to this movie with some anticipation and would recommend anyone intresstred in the Action/Suspence/Thriller/Drama genres give it a go around Christmas time.

Just got around to watching Olympus has Fallen, and my advice is to not waste your time or money on this.

I am really struggling to come up with anything positive to say about this film.

The script has more (plot) holes than a net, the CGI looks pretty obvious and while the action scenes are well produced, the sheer absurdity of what you are seeing makes it impossible to enjoy it even as a 'leave your brain at the door' mindless action film. Some of the serious action scenes are so ridiculous, it might have been considered OTT even for an action spoof movie.

Bad bad film.

I found the action scenes entertaining but the plot was very predictable. Good thing I didn't pay to see it.

I went to see WWZ last evening. I'm usually not a big fan of zombie type movies but this one was decent. Quite watchable. The biggest difference between this movie and the many dozen others is the main focus of it was more on the actual storyline itself as oppose to just simply throwing gory scenes after gory scenes of zombies attacking and munching on victims face so common in this genre.

I saw The Lone Ranger on the Forth of July. It was like I was watching a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Just switch the pirates for outlaws. I don't know if Gore Verbinski, who directed both, has some sort of doily fetish. Remember that skinny pirate that can pluck out his eyeball? They had him wear something like a doily over his head to make him look feminine. In The Lone Ranger there was a skinny outlaw wearing a doily. I think they missed the mark with this Lone Ranger. I just couldn't take him seriously. It was like Seth Rogen's version of the Green Hornet. He was just playing the same guy he does in every movie but he was the Green Hornet. You could never buy this guy was the Green Hornet.

Agreed. We saw Despicable Me 2 and The Lone Ranger yesterday.

DM2 was a great, funny animated movie. If you liked the 1st one, you will really love the 2nd. Giving the little minions more time was a big plus. We loved the movie. 4.5 stars for us.

LR was a bomb. Totally predictable Depp lines and action. Not in keeping at all with the character or story line of the Lone Ranger that many of us grew up with. Would not see it again and felt I wasted my money. 2 stars at best.

Here's a couple of GREAT featurettes about the upcoming Pacific Rim movie, opening here in the states this coming weekend. The explain a lot about the huge mechanized robots that are built by several nations across the globe to fight the alien monsters. They speak specifically of Russian, a Chinese and an American weapons.

Myself, my sons, son in laws, and friends have been looking forward to this movie for over a year.

I watched Sharknado... I mean Pacific Rim last night. It was fun. It looked great but I wish some of these battles took place during the day. When they have them at night, it makes me think they're hiding maybe that the special effects don't look as good. Also what happened to the Japanese Jaeger? They had a poster for it but none on screen.

I will be seeing it in a few hours. really looking forward to it.

I had a friend who saw it last night here in Boise and was really jazzed about it. Also it opened overseas and at US military bases and other friends also really liked it..

I'll let you guys know what my thoughts are tonight.

I felt it was one of the few movies of recent times that came across quite well in 3D, however some parts of the storyline reminded me of 'Independence Day'

After seeing that movie, who still wants to be a FighterJock. Me wants to be a Yeager Pilot... Oh yeah.
