@giy2105: Why don't we wait and see what China is developing when they finally, if ever, test this DF-21D of theirs. So far like many things else DF-21D is still a concept. Many weapons are developed on paper but never live up to what was advertised.

For your information the DF-21 is a copy of the Pershing 2, right down to the guidance and terminal homing system. Check it for yourself.

? Are you the designer of DF-21? In fact, we do not have much open source of DF-21. Yet , you are sure of it.. I check the link, nothing to suggest DF-21 copy of pershing II right from top to bottom. Are you ok?

Here's the part you missed. This is quoted from the link regarding the Pershing 2:

"...The highly accurate terminal guidance technique used by the Pershing II RV was radar area correlation, using a Goodyear Aerospace active radar guidance system. This technique compared live radar video return to prestored reference scenes of the target area and determined RV position errors with respect to its trajectory and target location. These position errors were used to update the inertial guidance system, which in turn sent commands to the vane control system to guide the RV to the target...."

The DF-21D under development is trying to use a dynamic version of the Pershing 2 active radar area correlator as the method to locate the carrier in its terminal dive. So far they have had no success.

More:..."Pershing II was to use the new W85 warhead with a 5-50 kt variable yield or an earth-penetrator W86 warhead. The warhead was to be packaged in a maneuverable reentry vehicle (MARV) with active radar guidance and would be launched with the Pershing I rocket engines..."

Later in non-nuclear versions of the Pershing 2 a concept warhead using kinetic energy penetrators for counter-airfield operations was discussed.

A kinetic energy bomblet warhead has been discussed many times as a payload to render the flight deck useless for DF-21D to carry.

Its all there. Connect the dots

If PLA second artillery is going to used a ASBM with guidance like Goodyear aerospace active radar guidance, it will never hit the moving carrier..
Obviously trying to hit a moving object, Pershing II will fail badly. Obviously, that is not their goal.

You have absolutely no right to call the DF-21 a "copy" of the Pershing 2. That's just sheer intellectual laziness on your part. The term "copy" is more appropriately applied the Su-27 vis-a-vis the J11, as they share actual development histories. No matter how single-minded you may be, you will have an extremely difficult time trying to prove to yourself or anyone else that the DF-21 has any direct relationship to the Pershing 2. You can't even demonstrate that the DF-21 was 'inspired' by the Pershing 2 much less accuse it of being a 'copy'. The DF-21 was developed from the JL-1 SLBM, which itself has no relationship to the land-based Pershing 2. Get your facts straight.

Sorry but a fact is a fact. Look at the pictures and let your own eyes be the judge. The white missile is the DF-21D

Recall that the Pershing II added a MaRV that married a 5-80kt warhead (with an earth penetrating option) with terrain-scene matching radar to give this relatively low yield weapon a remarkable hard-kill capability owing to a CEP inside of 30 meters...."

Pershing 2 was 1980s technology. The DF-21D is trying to build on what Pershing 2 did in the 1980s. The only other known ASBM was the Russian SS-NX-13 which was never made to work properly and eventually given up as a dead end. There are many problems the DF-21D must overcome to perform its mission. So far these problems have proved impossible to solve

The white one is a DF-15/CSS-6, NOT the DF-21D.

You are right, but I think the USS Yorktown was first struck by Japanese dive bombers and torpedo carriers before finally finished off by the Japanese submarine when she was already dead in the water.

True, but the torpedo is still slow in comparison to cruise missiles and Anti-ship missiles.

True, Torpedo are slow the fastest supercavitating rocket powered torpedo can go is around 200 Knots...

It is basically as fast as a slow airplane... which is still quite fast.

Lol... Mr Nikex, you got the things wrong. Or are you going to say so DF-21D will still look at DF-15? You simply have no idea what are you talking about and just try to press your idea forward.

Facts will always be facts. Lies can only get you that far..

I actually think most navies combat ships still prefer to deal with incomming anti-ship missiles than incomming torpedoes.

Torpedoes might be slow, but they tends to be fired quite close to their target.

So assuming that you can sneak to 5km from your target, the response time for a shkval is between 1-2 minutes at most.
