US knows that at the moment, not only can they not pull off a succesful annexation, but even the threat of annexation is not credible.
The biggest evidence of that is that China is still operating at disarmed levels. If China truly feared America could take over Taiwan (or other places), then you'd see a military buildup, but that's not the case even in 2023.
So why all these bases? The first step US needs to do before even contemplating a military operation would be to build up enough power to seriously threaten one.
With only Guam, Okinawa, Australia and Hawaii (mainland Japan being shaky at best and SK would be taken out by NK due to the MDT if they attacked), US doesn't have enough survivable forces.
By establishing a threat towards China in Asia, US hopes to make China use more resources into military and to throw off her economical balance. Of course, should China weaken her forces by a lot, there is a chance that US would actually invade. However I believe for now, they're only threatening and trying to make the threat more credible in order to buy time.
Both sides are buying time. Gentlemen, let the arm race begin.
I recall just a few months ago many members on this board were very pessimistic about China's projection of power in West Asia with comments like "MBS can be couped any time since China's navy can't sail that far". The rumor of Saudi's acquisition of 12 052Ds was also quickly dismissed on SDF.
