it's possible that the Alaska meeting may not happen. China used "despicable act", "malicious intention" to denounce the US-jap meeting. it's not about rhetoric, it's about substances. they're testing water on issues about openly support Taiwan independence, and deploy ballistic missiles in japan.

I understand you think you are trying to "talk me back from the brink" and its also in good faith, so its understandable. Perhaps I should clarify:

1) I certainly hope nobody goes out shooting on a rampage. Rather what was highly effective about BLM was armed supporters of the protesters who could prevent white supremacist and "police" elements from exacting violence against demonstrators the same way they did with George Floyd. We need armed protection at these protests.
2) Its a very typical asian idea to try to simply flee back to safety. While I agree that repatriation to China is the ultimate end goal, that is not the primary objective in the initial phases, we need protests and mobilization among multiple media and social channels. Again, huge amounts of the population were against BLM, but their mobilization still brought America to paralysis and raised serious existential questions. We cannot go wagging a tail between the two legs now fleeing back to china, it just perpetuates the narrative of the chinese spy/coward and invites more attack against the remaining community that is here.
3) We do not know whether the escalation matrix will even permit a return to china, for example it is incredibly likely protests will go nationwide within the next 2-3 days, just like with George Floyd. As we should expect no sympathy from a federal white supremacist government, its is entirely likely Chinese nationals will not be permitted to leave in state of martial law.
4) Not everyone on this forum has the necessary technical expertise to specifically develop china. Many of our backgrounds are in finance/investing but in an anglosphere setting. My best and highest use of talents is to continue staying here, where I continue to use my purchasing power to buy Chinese goods, until they are eventually boycotted. I've set my Chinese goods purchase level to be approximately $30,000 a year, or approximately 20x the average per capita spend, in an effort to further develop key Chinese technologies and also build awareness of quality Chinese products (since even I can admit there is a bunch of cheap crap out there). I had previously set a level of 10x per capita spend which I communicated to the forum in June-2020, but investments returns have been good and I have gotten a new job and saved money elsewhere so I upped the budget. Its also helpful when I used to be a huge food aficionado but now restaurants arent as appealing/accessible.
5) I am not trained as a professional killer. But Canada does allow me to have a PAL, and you can see a few pictures of my loadout in the small arms threat. I hope nobody has illusions about protecting themselves from real US special killer forces, I'm talking about dumb deranged republican white supremacists here. Also I make sure to keep hitting the gym (especially important during a pandemic) and run with a weighted bag to simulate a heavier loadout. Think local overmatch, not global dominance.

We are both on the same side, and as long as we use our intelligence (albeit in different ways) we can play our part to ensure the vicotry of Chinese civilization.
There are Canadian Repubs? Where you at? Alberta which is the Texas of Canada last I heard. Stay safe and keep away from the yahoo's bud. Keep doing what you're doing in terms of keeping fit, and protecting yourself from any potential violence against yourself or your love ones.

To all the second generation Chinese/Asian Americans who fantasize about going back to China. Unless you have a very special skill set (semiconductor design, aerospace, etc. or sports) you’ll have a hard time there. Competition is very fierce for regular jobs and unless you have the proper connections, it is not easy living.

I have family members/family friends in the university system/SOEs in China. I know how things operate. Maybe ten or fifteen years ago you can get some additional considerations for being a fancy English speaker. Nowadays there are like a tens of millions of Chinese international students. You are no longer special if you just bank on your language skills.

Alright, if you've got nothing to offer than buying Chinese goods, do what you can/want but in the end, money is only an artificial construct of society which only has value when society is in tact and with honor. Only STEM subjects, only science is real power. So if you think your maximum value is staying in a Western nation to buy Chinese goods, I think that's a rather small contribution for a person but fine, you stay and act brave. You think that they want to exterminate you but you put yourself and your family in a sea of these people with a gun when they all have guns; I take that as being irresponsible and stupid. Canada's probably safer than the US but to me this is pretty much similar to the case of the old man to refuses to leave Tornado Valley cus he thinks it makes him tough that he's in a pissing match with the wind. However, you do not project this onto other Chinese people. Chinese scholars who have devoted their lives to mastery of STEM subjects deciding to return to China are anything other than cowardly; they are heroes throwing away their wealth and the easy lifestyles they have grown accustomed to in the West to bring meaning to their lives. They know that the only way for China to win is for them to pour their knowledge into China so that China as a country prevails over the US. These people are in every way superior to the stubborn people who think they can stay in the West to cause minor disruptions through protests and whatnot. And that's the kindest way to put it; most people will say that Chinese people who hate the West yet stay there are soft and cowardly because they fear the tough challenges in China and crave the ease of life in the West so they only offer lip service to their supposed patriotism with an excuse to keep living in comfort. These people will never be more than fleas on a lion's back while the sea turtles who bring back their crafts to China will be the architects and masters of a Chinese future.

I dont know if you realize this but the vast majority of overseas chinese are NOT STEM. Had the overseas chinese been all STEM, they would not have been as successful as they are today. The US is primarily driven by legal, and finance professions, and chinese are over-represented in those accordingly. Of course I could have chosen to become a scientist (not hard considering how low entrance averages are in Canadian universities) but very few scientists can make over $300,000 by the time they are 30s. Also back when I was 18, I hardly was thinking that 13 years later america would start waging a global war on China. China of course is in need of more engineers and scientists to create ever more advanced systems and technologies, but it also needs access to cash (lets be real, money is hard power), and media capability. A web designer is also necessary in the fight against america in order to create media campaigns, just like how an accountant/financier is needed to fund ever increasing projects. The fight against America will be omni-channel, involving access to capital, public relations, along with science and technology.

I'm not gonna be stupid and say an accountant is equal to an aerospace engineer pound for pound, but at the same time you should also realize that America didn't become the world's pre-eminent power by having the most scientists or engineers. Otherwise we would be speaking german in the reich today. America's power comes from the ability to have a large scientific base, coupled with mobilization of the worlds financial resources under the current IMF/WB system, and a massive public relations/propaganda network that leverages other countries to augment areas where america is weak/deficient. STEM is the core foundation of power, but its not the only pillar, something I must remind people on SDF if,

To boil it succinctly, I have no doubt you would be a better engineer at DJI to design a drone than me. Your years of scientific training would lead you to that. But you aren't doing that right now. I have in the course of the last year spent well over $10,000 on DJI products, specifically since they represent the bleeding edge of civilian tech which I can reasonably invest in. Its with the same mind-set that I have shifted my investment allocations to double my exposure to China equities from 25% to 50% last year. We each contribute in our own ways. For that reason, even though you are acting increasingly aggressive against me, I see no reason to respond in kind to you. We are on the same team.

To be fair, only a small subset of people have skills that can actually contribute to the nation.

Most people work on fairly pointless things like web design or accounting.

This is how i see things. I would rather earn a living in the US because you get the biggest $ for the least amount of work. Even no talent BS artist can make good money in the US. I never understood why everyone keeps saying the US is a service economy. Experience tells me that the quality of services in the US is extra-ordinarily poor. Just look at your place of employment and how many people are just freeloaders and hardly contributing to society.

On the other hand, I would rather spend my money in China or Asia because I can get the best bang for my money. Better value and services. Sometimes the quality of services I receive in Asia continues to surprise me.

Fortunately I have this opportunity to my best advantage.

There is more then only China, but for someone in tech the best option is either a tier 1 city in China or Singapore it should give you enough buying power to also support family back in the west if the need arises.

From what I heard salary in Korea or Tokyo are bleak and those economies are stagnate or declining, also I'm not completely sure if its a possibility to support family back in the west.

Then you have the ASEAN nations a lot of future potential, but it might only payout after a decade or 2 if the ASEAN nations can keep a 6~8% annual growth rate. After like 2 plus decades the ASEAN region GDP should have multiplied by 4. Using the rule of +-70 divided by annual growth rate equals the years needed to double. This might be an option that will pay out for your children and grand children's. If you can't get into the Chinese economy.

I'm doing some light research to see if I should migrate back to Asia.

I think most of us here have family in China and are well aware of the employment situation there. The fact that I am seriously considering relocating to China speaks more about the state of North America than about China.

What's more, there are other ways to earn a living than a 996 job. I am under no illusion that I'd be able to find a job in a market where the average programmer is under 30. More likely I will keep working here and send my wife and kids back, or maybe sell our properties here and buy something in a tier 2 or tier 3 city. Maybe start a business.

Anyway, I hope we still have some time before we need to make this decision. I'm more optimistic for Canada, but I have no doubt it's only going to be a matter of time.

Latest 观棋有语 says there's decent chance that the Alaska meeting may not happen as the attitude from US suggest they just want to complain and shit talk China, rather than try to solve any problems.
If this is the case, This meeting is just a waste of time and China has most important matters to attend to.
