Whether he's well known or not in China, cancelling him on Weibo is just bad PR. Definitely not the way to build soft power lol. The Chinese authority needs to grow some skin.

He's now milking it on YouTube with the latest video about being cancelled and the comments are all one-sided pro Roger.
I myself may have mixed feelings about this, but at the same time its been the norm in China for decades and to be expected of the government system it has. In short, it sucks but its not surprising and in the end for some things like talking politics in public either seriously or satirically, rules are rules.

If anything, the bigger topic of discussion amongst the Chinese public was the punishment of that comedy troupe last week who made fun of the PLA. An action which seemed to get popular support here, but its a military forum so such sentiment is to be expected compared to Uncle Roger, which I guess resonates more with the SD's users since he's a famous diaspora comedian, despite being the equivalent of Ken Jeong.

Weibo is the Chinese government now?

Is China supposed to be some kind of hive-mind entity?
I admit I'm not familiar with how censorship works on Weibo. I do know Weibo is privately owned, but does the state have censorship control over it including suspending accounts?

Weibo isn't that much different from those US social media companies that employ content moderators to enforce rules. Government does give out guideline and rules and what they deem to be unacceptable. However, Chinese social media more often than not have only cheery-pick what to enforce and what not to enforce.

The only exception is when someone reported you for gross violation to the government agency. Then you might have someone that represents the government to take a look at it. Government officials can ask social media companies to suspense accounts. However, for big social media companies, government usually just delegates responsibilities even in this kind of situation. More importantly, social media companies sometime would ignore government's request for its own interests.

That's why a suspension of accounts might or might not have anything to do with the government. Often, social media companies made their own decision and balance between their interests and rules and enforcement. Which means there are people that are protected by social media companies for whatever reasons, there are people that they don't have problem for banning for violation, and there are people that they dislike which would invite ban or suspense. Not much different like Trump got banned or un-banned because of politics and interests of the companies.
