Tensions between the United States and China over Taiwan have raised the prospect of a potential military conflict, but national security adviser Jake Sullivan believes such a scenario can be avoided.
"There is a risk of conflict with respect to Taiwan, but I believe that with responsible stewardship, we can ensure that this contingency never comes to pass. And that is our responsibility," he told Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep in an exclusive interview.
Sullivan, however, acknowledged that achieving this objective will require "hard work" and "coordination with allies."
"It will require us following through on the commitments of the Taiwan Relations Act, which for 40 years now has said we will provide defensive articles to Taiwan. And it will require direct diplomacy with the [People's Republic of China]," he said. "We have to make this a priority to ensure there is not a war over the Taiwan Strait."

Japan nears plan for ammo storage network closer to Taiwan

Exclusive: Defense officials seek to spread out firepower with dozens of new depots
Japanese defense officials are weighing a plan to build dozens of ammunition and weapons depots on far-flung southwestern islands in preparation for a potential Taiwan crisis, Nikkei has learned.
Japan has about 1,400 ammunition storage facilities nationwide, but 70% are located in the country's northernmost main island of Hokkaido, more than 2,000 km away from Japanese islands in the East China Sea.
Defense planners seek to spread these supplies out to make them more accessible to Japanese forces defending the country's China-facing islands.
The Defense Ministry estimates the Ground Self-Defense Force will need about 90 additional munitions depot within the next decade, while the Maritime Self-Defense Force will need roughly 40 more depots.
One proposal would build nearly 70 ammunition storage facilities within the next five years.
The new depots will be located in the Nansei Islands, which include Okinawa and extend toward Taiwan from the southern tip of Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu. The government will begin discussions with local authorities and residents on the proposed islands.
Defense officials will consider joint use of U.S. military installations in Japan as well.
