Russian troops retreating. NATO called on russian bluff. I guess Russia doesn’t have the apetite to eacalate the tenson & face more sanction from west. May be a potential taiwan crisis will be played out similar to what happened in ukraine/russia quagmaire.

We must be very careful of this, seeming, withdrawal. Some historians reported that in 1939, the Germans invaded Poland by marching in backwards while saying they were leaving!

Calm your horses. Putin doest seem to be as interested in NATO's response as you think he is

And then you decide to throw them a bone by including them in conversation for once, and it may happen that the topic of that conversation is poverty, national dysfunction, toilets per capita or cow rape because a man thought it was his reincarnated wife, and they start raging again... You just can't win with these guys
I’m just wonderin’ how the guy recognized the cow! Was his wife that ugly?

From what I am reading, Scholz might have done some magic here. It seems that he accepts Russia's demand that Ukraine shouldn't join NATO but Putin obviously needs a solid guarantee for this (constitutional?).
Scholz is trying to do exactly that ("formalise Ukraine's non-membership in NATO")

Scholz seems to be a smart cookie. If he manages to maneuver this we might have a Angela Merkel 2.0 here

How disappointed I am with you that you didn’t post this in the Ukraine thread! ;-)

However, if Scholz cannot persuade the Ukrainians to amend their constitution, he certainly won’t get the Anglos to agree to NATO rescinding Ukraine’s invitation to join!

It's a nice sentiment and Scholz seems to be a decent, peace-loving man. Unfortunately, he's not the one in charge - not of NATO and not of Germany.

Germany (and every other NATO country) have a veto over NATO expansion.

So if France and Germany both formalise that Ukraine will not be joining NATO, the rest of Europe will broadly go along.

How are they going to "formalise" though?

If its just a "law", I doubt that Putin would accept it. Probably only a formal treaty or a constitutional amendment would be acceptable.

And even then, you can still count on the US to immediately start the salami-slicing

Thanks!

So, then Germany would have to “promise” to veto Ukraine’s accession, seems somewhat less than formal.
