Russia will never side with the West for numerous reasons. NATO expansion toward Russian borders. Russian economy depend on China for trade, investment and finance. There are many anti-Russian Western elites that want to see Russia weak and a vassal state of the West. Russians are proud people that will never be a vassal to any country. Russia and China interests don’t clash in any area.
Any fantasy the Russians had about the west and the US was destroyed in the 2014 Ukraine regime change.

I think (or I like to believe) that the Russians know who the troublemakers are in the "West". I would not say Russia lost hope with the "West" but western trouble makers such as the US-UK, and their butt-hurt vassal states in the eastern Europe (i.e.: Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Western Ukraine).

Ayrtom Lukin has been writing some eyebrow raising article vis-a-vis China which makes me believe he's one of those Russians who prefers to be allied with the West to destroy an "uppity" China ie white chauvinist solidarity.
Might be just looking for clicks. I followed him before and he had tweeted some anti west stuff too. Like that time when former US ambassador to Russia very clearly tried to drive a wedge between China and Russia and he called him out. He did tweet weird stuff on China Russia relations recently. Although it's just one guy opinion. Public opinion can be fickle but Russian public have favourable view on China currently. Much higher than the Westerners on China. also as western views on Russia is very unfriendly and suspicious. There is no doubt sino Russian is at high in recent times. This is forged by external and internal factors. So I doubt this lukin guy can change that at all

Stop being naive. There's plenty of Russians that don't like China. They're only friendly because Putin hates the West.

It's obvious that the China Russia rapprochement is due to their mutual interest in defending against Western aggression.

What's important, however, is to understand why the West is a threat to Russia.

Before Putin, Russia was run by oligarchs who were siphoning Russian wealth and resources to the West. It's no surprise that this was the warmest period between Russia and the West, and that relations quickly cooled when Putin started putting an end to all of that.

As an aside, there is a remarkable correlation between corruption and Western friendliness. For both China and Russia, the periods of best relations with the West coincide with the greatest amount of corruption in civil service.

So yes, if Putin dies and the oligarchs return to power, Russia may very well turn back West. However, so long as Russia maintains an independent policy, the West will always be a far greater threat to it than China.

To expand on that, greater Russian economic sufficiency (such as chip production) would also add to antagonism with the the West as it would also reduce Western economic leverage over Russia.

“There are no permanent friends, only permanent interests, and those interests we regard as eternal.”
That's simply untrue. What is an alliance like AUKUS except an expression of racial solidarity - i.e., a "permanent friendship"? That fella down under even called it a "forever partnership." Second, China and Russia will always have an interest in maintaining a good relationship to ensure a stable Central Asia and free both of them to deal with the Washington flunkies in their respective neighbourhoods.
