"Advanced new Taiwan jet trainer crashes in setback for programme
One of the Taiwan air force's new, domestically developed advanced jet trainer aircraft crashed on Saturday after reporting engine failure, though the pilot safely bailed out, the military said.
It was the first major setback for the AT-5 Brave Eagle, made by state-owned Aerospace Industrial Development Corp (2634.TW), opens new tab with a budget of T$68.6 billion ($2.1 billion). The first test flight in 2020.
Taiwan's air force said the aircraft took off from the Chihhang air base in Taitung on the island's east coast for a weapons training mission and then reported the failure of both its engines
The single pilot flying the dual-cockpit aircraft was rescued after parachuting out, while the jet, which had only 183 flying hours, crashed into the sea, it said, adding that an investigation team has been set up.
Taiwan's air force plans on taking 66 units by 2026 to replace its aging predecessor the AT-3 and U.S.-made F-5 training aircraft, which have suffered a series of crashes in recent years.
Taiwan's armed forces are mostly equipped by the United States, but the government has made development of an advanced home-grown defence industry a priority, especially as China, which claims the island as its own, steps up military modernisation efforts and drills near Taiwan.
The AT-5 is Taiwan's first jet made domestically since the F-CK-1 Ching-kuo Indigenous Defence Fighter, or IDF, rolled out more than three decades ago.[...]"
(Who built the engines?)

It's Chennai number 5. ;)

Haha! That's so funny brother ansy1968.

Let's watch some ancient TV commercials, for old times sake.

Chanel No. 5

Those perfume commercials were like abstract art.

These DIM Pantyhose commercials are more to the point.

I never knew the Chanel No. 5 was actually deeply penetrated into popular culture and the psyche of the society, until I saw it on The Simpsons.

Everyone will like the panty hose commercial.

I still like that panty hose commercial.

:rolleyes::p

Has nobody ever briefed DOGE before they went ahead with the firings? Lmao

Anyone that says that the powers that be in the USA knows WTF they are doing should seriously GTFO right now because really this spontaneous bullshit happening ever since Trump took office does not spell out anything less then a text book case of digging yourself deeper with an excavator instead of a shovel

This should go in the AI thread but here is something I noticed. India won't shut the hell up about AI but if you notice not only does it have basically no real groundbreaking AI development, it's companies have no plan to implement AI either.

In contrast all the robotic companies in China alone will be able to use and benefit from the tech advancements from deepseek.

This is not surprising.

India is a really poor country.

The well off have no incentive to do anything other than preserve their own status inside India.

At least in America, someone like Trump comes along to shake things up. That will never happen in India.

Hence, all the Indians want to flee their own country.

makes some good points about the current Munich Security conference, but imo it shares more similarities with the 1938 one rather than the 2007 one.

Perhaps most worrying of all, Vance's vision seems to completely disregard why the post-WW2 European architecture was built in the first place. Europe is the place where both world wars started, 100% of them. The past 80 years were a uniquely peaceful time in European history: due to the high density of states in a relatively small geography and the somewhat disagreeable character of many European nations (the French very much included), the continent had been in almost constant conflict for the previous millennium. I really dislike European institutions as much as the next guy but I don't forget the original spirit with which they were built: to put an end to endless war in Europe.
By positioning America as an ally of nationalist forces against these institutions, Vance isn't just ending an alliance - he's actively working to unwind the entire post-war European peace architecture, which could have immense ramifications. In fact I think we can even legitimately ask ourselves if the U.S. doesn't now have war in Europe as one of its strategic objectives. Given the U.S.'s history in triggering wars left, right and center when it believes they're in their interests, and given Vance's speech, I think the question has merits.

He is of European descent so we understand his stance, but to the rest of the world, why is another war in Europe a bad thing? Europeans have been killing each other since the beginning of history, without external interference they will resort to the same behaviour. I think the three great powers, US, China and Russia should mostly leave Europe to themselves and let them sort out their own problems. Furthermore, the Europeans have been killing non-Europeans all across the world for centuries, they often pit different ethnic groups against each other (i.e., Asia, Africa, Americas), now that the tables have turned I'm sure it's only fair that Europeans get a taste of what proxy wars feel like.

A warring Europe means more customers for the US MIC, less competition for Chinese industries and more influence for the long sidelined Russians. Europe is weak militarily and politically, they cannot threaten the big three and their citizens are living a life beyond their means. It's time to let Europeans live the life they deserve.

My thoughts are well encapsulated within this netizen's comments
中国人靠996,美国人靠打三份工加上卖血,俄罗斯人靠流血牺牲战场填线,你们欧洲人靠什么过着每周30小时工作,每年夏天全民度假一个月的好日子?你们凭什么???
Deepseek's translation
"The Chinese rely on 996 (9 AM to 9 PM, 6 days a week), Americans rely on working three jobs and selling blood, Russians rely on bloodshed and sacrifices to fill the battlefronts. What do you Europeans rely on to enjoy a 30-hour workweek and a month-long summer vacation for everyone every year? What gives you the right???"
