Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is Missing

Huh?? I've followed this thread on a regular basis and I don't remember ever coming across folks in this forum doing that.

Referring to most other sites and articles in general. This place is rather the exception to the rule which has allowed decent discussion to take place.

They're deploying passive sonar buoys from aircraft which supposedly caught a ping. Didn't they say any detection device had to be deep to detect the ping?

According to news reports, the sensors onboard the Haixun 01 were DPL-275's so I doubt anyone is testing China's sub-surface detection capabilities given that the sensors aren't even Chinese technology.

I don't think so either. Otherwise they could have just remained silent.

I was watching CNN and they were scoffing at footage of the Chinese using a dipping pole to hear the pings stating they could not possibly hear the ping from that depth using that. There were mixed comments where that footage was just for domestic consumption to make it look like the government was active. Believable since the Chinese media is notorious for using file footage in their media reports.
That happens everywhere. All sorts of outlets use such pictures and may times they are inaccurate...including in the US.

Then you have the Australian ship heading to that area when the Chinese heard pings only to have them hear their own set of pings along the way. Why did the Australians have the towed array in the water when they said China finding the pings was a shot in the dark chance finding it without any debris found first? They said China might've heard the ping from the example they had onboard. That also means a sub could be trailing the Chinese using a pinger example to test China's sonar capability to cover what they were doing.

Is it the same ping the Australians are detecting? Most likely not but it opens the door that a sub is stalking Chinese ships gathering intel. Using the exact same pinger everyone is looking for is a great way to get the Chinese not to suspect. There has been no debris found in the area the Australians are searching. Are they really pings or are they just saying that because they want China not to know there's a sub stalking them?
Come on Mace, this is pure specualtion and rumor mongering. Absolutely no good will come of it.

The US and others could have used submarines to track and get acoustical reads on these vessels long before they ever arrived in the search area. No country would place a nulcear or other sub in such a situation during a search/rescue/recovery operation like this.

The people out there are searching for a downed airliner.

I'm just following what is being put out there. I didn't write that article from the Telegraph. It suggest that there's a game being played between the West and China over this event. Then added to that the suspicions towards the Chinese and their motives searching an area that wasn't a part of the official search grid. So were the Chinese gathering their own intelligence or were the British? If the British were searching for the black boxes, why is there suspicion on the Chinese that weren't even near the area where the British were searching? It would be explained if the Chinese detected something which happened to be someone's sub stalking them and may even said it was a pinger to hide they knew a sub was following them. And the Chinese could just watch the reaction to their news which would tell a lot.

Re: Malaysia Airlines Plane is Missing

I watched, and listened to some fairly detailed analysis of the "pings" they are getting and was able to listen to come of the very distinctive and very regular "clicks" they are getting.

One of the analysts there on site in Australia said he had a 99% confidence that they are hearing a black box and that it must be from the Malaysian Flight. He said they will not announce it officially until they have the exact location identified and have other, documented evidence, either by way of pictures or sonar maps that prove it.

This is the absolute best information I have heard the entire time. I hope this man was right for the sake of the families.

Hopefully that'd translate into finding the wreckage in the coming weeks, so the families can stop holding out false hope, even when that still means no bodies can be recovered for burial.

I don't understand why pings observed from Australian cannot be the same source that the Chinese has observed, despite a few hundred (450km?) km apart. The sea floor is like 4500-5000km down. It is less than 8 deg difference between the Chinese and Australian ships from such deep depth (tangent angle calculation).

The sea doesn't go down 4500-5000 km down... that is the width of the USA... should be 4-5 km deep...

Flight MH370 co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid may have tried to call from his cell phone after the plane went missing and was flying at a low altitude over Penang, The call signal was picked up by a Telco tower in Penang, the morning it went missing on March 8.

The time when signal picked up could reveal more details on what happened to MH370,
