Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is Missing

Re: Malaysia Airlines Plane is Missing

Could be complicated by the terrain of the sea floor which I think was not flat and thus direct sounds non-uniformly. Would help if they have a clear floor map of the area. Also if the attenuation is heavy through the water it may not make much amplitude difference once it reached the surface at different locations. I heard the water depth there could be as deep as over 4k.

I suppose what they could do is have the ship travel in a circular spiral from the periphery into what they think should be the centre point, then have the recorder open to record all instances of pings and their strength if possible, and make a data map out of it. This means that even if they couldn't locate the signal origin when the power ran out they at least have this information to infer to and continue their search.

Also record down the exact time that the pings were received (as those signal repeat at 1 sec intervals), the difference in time at different locations could be used to infer the location of the black box, if there was only one of them. Maybe use time from satellite network.

I wonder if submarines like the Seawolf would be able to detect those transmissions better.

As I mentioned in post #729 the HMS Tireless, a Trafalgar class nuclear sub, had been assigned to help with the search. I don't know how active it has been in directly hunting for pings. Haven't heard much about it until this report from yesterday.

Interesting... They said when Chinese ships heard the pings, they might've heard the pinger example onboard their own ship. How about Chinese ships were being trailed by subs to gather intelligence on China's capabilities and the ping was coming from them?

I would think they could correlate the timings of what they heard to when their own pingers were turned on or off. The hypocrisy I see in posts saying how Australians and British are trying to locate MH370 but without showing to the Chinese or anyone else how they do it. So.......where do folks get off critiquing about the Chinese potentially not sharing? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Do subs use the same 37.5 kHz frequency to gather intel?

Huh?? I've followed this thread on a regular basis and I don't remember ever coming across folks in this forum doing that.

I was watching CNN and they were scoffing at footage of the Chinese using a dipping pole to hear the pings stating they could not possibly hear the ping from that depth using that. There were mixed comments where that footage was just for domestic consumption to make it look like the government was active. Believable since the Chinese media is notorious for using file footage in their media reports. Then there were those that believed China wasn't revealing what technology they were using. Interesting how there seemed to be anger when the news came of China hearing the pings first because it wasn't anywhere near the designated search zone. So some wondered why the Chinese were searching there. Then you have the Australian ship heading to that area when the Chinese heard pings only to have them hear their own set of pings along the way. Why did the Australians have the towed array in the water when they said China finding the pings was a shot in the dark chance finding it without any debris found first? They said China might've heard the ping from the example they had onboard. That also means a sub could be trailing the Chinese using a pinger example to test China's sonar capability to cover what they were doing. They seemed to be quick to dismiss China's discovery of the ping. Is it the same ping the Australians are detecting? Most likely not but it opens the door that a sub is stalking Chinese ships gathering intel. Using the exact same pinger everyone is looking for is a great way to get the Chinese not to suspect. There has been no debris found in the area the Australians are searching. Are they really pings or are they just saying that because they want China not to know there's a sub stalking them?

According to news reports, the sensors onboard the Haixun 01 were DPL-275's so I doubt anyone is testing China's sub-surface detection capabilities given that the sensors aren't even Chinese technology.

Re: Malaysia Airlines Plane is Missing

the other big problem in detection, is that given the conditions at the bottom of deep Oceans, you cannot assume that you are searching for a Stationary object.

Overall though, my feeling of watching a very suspect pantomime is undiminished.
What are the odds that the final story will be "We can confirm that we have located the position of the two black boxes, but because of the deep and difficult conditions they are in, we may never be able to recover them. Neither have we been able to retrieve any wreckage to confirm that it is indeed MH370, but we know it is the aircraft and that is has now been found"
