Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is Missing

It seems that everyone else doesn't want China to be the first in anything. Pretty petty. You notice when China came out with the satellite pics early on there were a lot of skeptics noting the size of the piece. Then you have the Australians come out with Digitalglobe satellite pics. Same size objects but was more credible even weeks later. Yesterday I heard a comment on TV about the pings the Chinese detected where the guy noted how everything the Chinese have come up with have been proven false. Like everyone else's satellite pics and search area locations and everything else haven't been proven false? If Obama was upset that China reached Haiti after the earthquake before the US, I guess it shouldn't be surprising there's a competition going on here too. Now you're hearing media taking a poke at China for getting nothing right as to say of their capabilities. The tables can be turned because you know their technology is suppose to be vastly superior to China's.

Here's something else I noticed. When they had the aerial search teams from multiple countries split into two groups to search two different areas. China and Australia were on one team and the US and every other country including Australia were on the other. Looks like someone doesn't want China to learn anything up close and personal.

My understanding is that the pings are not exactly how most news media describe it as being one way. According to some TV commentators, the pings are signal handshakes that goes both ways between the plane and satellite. So, it may not be that simple to the simulate the handshake and doing so may require someone doing an inside job in the Satellite company, especially if some kind of encryption is used.
Such handshakes follow a protocol that cannot be kept secret and might well be according to an international standard. The exchange of information might have to be encripted but it was said that Malaysia Airlines doesn't subscribe to that service.

Here is a little scenario that you and Wolfie may appreciate.
If you suspect that you are being strung along by someone telling a fairy story, you can throw a spanner in the works, by contributing your own chapters.
Namely, you can claim to have "information" that the story tellers know has to be false. The story tellers either have to play along and risk losing control on the narrative, or they have to release new information of their own, in order to bring the story line "back on message".

Protocol and associated encryption should be proprietary to the satellite company, which is only required to provide data to its customers as part of its service.

Well that's why the news media hates the internet. Not only has it destroyed newspapers and magazines and cut down viewership on TV, they hate bloggers because now the news media elites don't completely control what information goes out to the public. And that's why they have also resorted to reporting non-news and rumor because they have to compete.

Question: if you hear a "ping", why is it not possible to ascertain where it came from?

Water columns are complex and the water columns of deep oceans exceptionally so. Current speed, temperature and salinity all effect the ability of sound to transmit, can affect both pitch and amplitude.
Even if the ship was directly above the transmitter, if there is high volatility in even local parts of the column, the variation to the ping can be substantial and make the readings almost worthless for direction finding.

The thing in your favour, is that you do know what the ping "should" sound like and so adjusting the acoustic response can help you produce a cone of probability. If you have accurate real time information to the conditions throughout the water column, you can adjust more accurately and reduce the size of the cone.

Ultimately though, you really need to have two or more receiving vessels to allow for good old triangulation to do the trick.

the word for today is "TRI-ANGULATION, in other words, three receivers around the source, spot on here Sam.

Or you can have one receivers and moving it to three different positions although that will take up precious time.

That's what I was thinking was supposed to be happening, but I guess the pinging has been only intermittent and so ships cannot get a fix on it.
