The official casualty number from PLA is the least important thing to India. It's like cutting your finger off to show someone that you are serious, yet they don't care. India has a zillion ways to spin PLA's number, why is that important?

The thinking of helping Modi save face and deescalate is very piece meal fashion and does harm to the long term stability of the border. China should think in broader, longer term, not just how to get out of the current crisis.

The idea of help Modi de-escalate is dangerous. It underestimate India society's ability to form public opinion based on the interest THEY see. It underestimates India military's appetite to take casualties. A few dozen casualties, a private humiliation, means nothing to them. Last year they had fighter jets shot down, pilot captured, helicopter crashed, but nothing changed. Why this time is any different?

On the contrary, China's goodwill can only been seen as a sign of weakness,i.e. China is eager to deescalate. If I'm Modi, I would draw the conclusion that China is afraid of economic backlash.

And that might not be too far from the truth either, that Chinese leadership is afraid of economic backlash. Otherwise, why not disclose the casualty number which every normal country in the world would do, which means nothing to India!

Knowing the thinking of your opponent is really important. If you have been dealing with someone and things don't work, change it instead of keep repeating the same failed approach again and again.
The Indian had claimed there were many chinese causulties, many more than India and at lease one presioner. You believed the PLA had at least one death maybe many more but the Chinese had not confirm any death except to say they had some light casulties. This let you to conclude that the Chinese failed, were military weak, unable to handle or understand India, afraid of Indian economic attack, embolden the Indian army to come back and you belieive all these let to China desperate for de-esclation. Just because China keep quite until the appropriate time to release info and refuse to be chest thumping? You think China by releasing an official figure now will change all these?
Have you for a moment consider that in spite of all the Indian claims, the Indians have not yet release a single name or picture/viedo of a death PLA or prisoner? That their claims of many PLA deaths and release of prisoner are fakes? Do you really believe that Modi trying to de-escalate is more dangerous to India, (maybe I misunderstood you on this?) . And China seeking to de-esclate and trying to find a diplomatic solution, even temporarily, is a sign of weakness?

If there were fatalities, then there would be an announcement. Maybe not right away. It isn't the first time the media has rushed to make a statement but later to retract them. Give it a few days, I think we would get our answer soon.

I believe the PLA has video of the encounter because Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian immediately and unequivocally asserted that Indian side bears responsibility for the incident through their reckless action. I will be extremely surprise if there is none given how logistically prepared the PLA are. This is unusually aggressive declaration coming from the foreign ministry.
As to why it is not release, it is to help deescalate tension and use as leverage in negotiation with Modi administration.

Do PLA soldiers sleep with their gun like this?

I don't care about the Indian mocking part. I just find it scary if the PLA soldiers sleep with their gun loaded like that.
Soldiers have to carry their sight adjusted rifles wherever they go when out in the field.
I cannot see the video, but it is normal to sleep with the rifle sans the magazine.
We usually have a plastic to cover the magazine opening and muzzle to keep out dust.

Yeah, we are usually quite blur and disoriented when rudely awakened in the middle of a deep sleep.
We don't want to be groping for our personal sight adjusted rifles in the dark when under a sneak attack.
So sleeping with rifles sans the magazine is not unusual.

While I don’t think the Chinese side wants war, they definitely saw this as an opportunity to test India’s limits. Until India does something physical I don’t think they’ll stop.
Or it is also possible that ,while they are trying to draw the indians in ladakh their intention actually lie somewhere else.
Reminds me of US tactic against USSR.
