PUCHENG, Shaanxi, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- An aircraft plummeted to the ground Friday morning during an air show held for the 2011 China International General Aviation Convention in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the executive committee of the convention confirmed at a press briefing.

One pilot, who witnesses said suffered minor injuries, survived as he was ejected and parachuted out before the fighter jet fell at 10:47 a.m. after finishing its performance, while another pilot remained missing, said He Liang, a member of the convention's executive committee, at a press conference held Friday afternoon.

Witnesses said the other pilot had been trapped in the jet, which nosedived and crashed to the ground near Neifu Airport in Pucheng County, where the air show was held.

Heavy smoke billowed around the Neifu Airport, about 100 km northeast to the provincial capital of Xi'an, after the accident occurred, said a Xinhua reporter at the scene.

An emergency team rushed to the scene to conduct a search and rescue operation for the second pilot, whose condition remains unknown, said He.

No casualties on the ground, a salt marsh near Donglou Village, Pucheng, have been reported.

An air show commentator said before the performance that the fighter jet FBC-1, also known as a Flying Leopard, was manufactured by the Xi'an Aircraft Industry Corp.

The air show continued until 12:30 p.m.

The three-day air show that opened on Friday is part of the 2011 China International General Aviation Convention being held in Xi'an.

Other events for the convention will go on as planned, said Jin Qiansheng, an official with the Yanliang National Aviation Hi-tech Industrial Base in Xi'an.

If you look at the video closely one of the parachutes failed to open. RIP to the pilot.

Are You sure?? IMO it seems as there was only time for one of the crew to eject and the other one remained at the plane.

It's too sudden, I don't think the guy whose piloting the plane even had enough time to response/eject.

I thought that the ejection sequence is automatic. If one is ejecting the other follow instantly.

I'd agree looking at the video that the Backseater ejected, while the Pilot seems to have remained in the jet. Aren't the ejection seats interconnected in chinese aircraft? Seems really odd. Or, if they have a selector switch for that, not having it in the BOTH position in this situation is strange. Also seems like an awefull long time anyway with no reaction in the front.
Almost looks like his right wing suddenly stalled. But mishap report will take some time.

The puff of dust is from the seat seperating from the pilot and hitting the ground.

I think I remember reading somewhere that for two seat aircraft, the pilot's ejection handle ejects both pilot and WSO while the backseat ejection handle would only eject the back seat. That might be reversed in trainers where the instructor usually sits in the back with the trainee in the front.

I think that there is an unhealthy culture within the PLAAF for pilots to want to do too much to save the plane when they really should have ejected. While this has lead to so amazing saves with planes coming back when they would have been abandoned and crashed in any other country, the downside is that some PLAAF pilots are killed needlessly trying to save an unsaveable plane despite having enough time to eject.

Hopefully this is something they will change over time.
