And IMO it has a clear industrial political aspect: CAC alone cannot produce all fighters for the PL and having as well as retaining a second team capable to develop and produce fighters is keeping technological and industrial sources.
Yes, those are very important factors.

I was just talking with @latenlazy about this actually. We saw the guy that got interviewing saying that J-35's core research team had average age of 32 to 33. That is so crazily impressive to have a young group of engineers that are involved in such a major project and will be around for decades to come.

sir this is pretty much the same story in Major high tech firms. CNSA average age is 35.

CJ-1000 final assembly line technicians are under 30's.

the crazy thing is, China has abundance of talent and new wave of talented young grads keep coming.

great to have young talented highly motivated engineers & scientists , of course with some older more experience engineers around. Younger engineers obviously have much more stamina and energy and ambitious and have limited constraint to the previous experiences that might limiting factor to innovations. 35ish is perfect, already have 10-13 years experience, golden time

Like you said, China has a lot and lot super talented engineers and scientists

J-35 looks simply superior to F-35 and J-20 in terms of shaping and aesthetics. My favourite plane in terms of just looks is Su-27 and F-22, this one comes close.

does the j-35a at this years Zhuhai have the new ws-19 engine yet?

We don't know, and there's been a few pages of debate about that.

My feeling is in absent of strongly confident or definitive statements by usual credible Chinese language PLA watchers and commentators, we are obliged to err on the side of "unlikely".
