His articles are usually pretty good, but I think he is a tad optimistic. I dont see hypersonic aircraft and LEO spaceplanes in China's near future.

Like Amace said, he does a bit of scare mongering and extrapolates some crazy results from a few photos and aerospace models.

That isn't to say China might not be able to produce hypersonic aircraft an LEO space planes though -- shenlong is getting close and the abundance of evidence in research into hypersonics is encouraging.

I don't know about those nozzle photos either, how could we have missed photos like that?

Also, as strange is the supposed test railgun photo (OT I know, I'll keep it brief)

Compared with the US navy's general atomics one, it looks quite favourable considering the former obviously isn't dolled up for display:

The TVC nozzles supposedly use composite materials. How the heck does that work? Wouldn't the temperature cause the composites to melt? Maybe this is some sort of joke done by Chinese netizens?

This does show that guys like Fisher hire Mandarin speakers to track down info. on Chinese military forums. Guess secrecy is important.
The Space Shuttle uses carbon-carbon composites in its wing leading edge experiencing very high temperatures. Other composites with very high temperature capability have been proposed.

Not sure what the composites would be but for tank armor the idea is ceramic layers can handle heat better

In the case of the jet engine nozzle, it's to reduce the IR signature. The external surface of the nozzle can be very much cooler than the inside as the heat resistant composite is also a very bad conductor of heat.

Thnx for the answer guys. Does any one have more info on that particular picture? I've seen the rail gun picture else where before but I've never seen the TVC nozzle one.

Whoa. Does this guy get paid to do this ? If so, whos paying it ?

Anyone who wants a positive story about their products they can cite, or a negative one about a competitor's.

Like I said, intellectual prostitutes.

Project 718 is the engine, not the airframe of J-20.

The Chinese banner of the famous pic reads "718验证机工程..." actually plays words around - it is a 'tech demonstrator' indeed - that is some other plane using project 718's new engine.

J-20 is a kick-ass woul-be-in-service 5th gen fighter on her own right. with, or without, the "Project 718" engine. (Of course we would like it WITH the new engine.)

- Just a clarification to the twisted origin of some paid-experts claiming the J-20 itself being a "tech demo".

no
it is
718工程验证机

The whole Airforce "718 project",
as far as I can gather,
includes, Vehicle, Engine, Weapons and Sensors.

The Chief Equipment Dept Head of Airforce project wouldn't be there for the banquet if it is only a test bed for a engine.
