It may have the proportional dimensions of the PL-12, but so is most other type of missiles. It's difficult to measure the size of the dummy missiles in the pictures with reasonable accuracy to tell if it's close to PL-12. Another thing is the dummy missile nose cone is very different with that of the PL-12 missile.
The other shots seem to confirm the missile is just shorter than the bay itself. That would lend itself to a missile around the length (and therefore width) of the PL-12. I'm of course not saying that it's the PL-12 itself, but PL-12 sized. The first picture, due to the angle, made the missile look far longer relative to bay length, which was why we had all thought it was a bigger missile initially.

huitong believe the missile was PL-15,compare with PL-12,the missile slightly bigger.and much longer range.giving the size of the missile, wonder if the missile can fit inside J-31 internal weapon bay.

IMHO... Why can't 2 more fixed missile rails (unlike the side weapon bays moveable rails) be mounted on the middle of the internal opening doors. With the deep internal bays, divided into 2 dividers; one missile rail could be mounted in the middle part of the door; when closed it might fit in between the 2 missiles' middle. With this configuration, 3 missiles in one compartment, with two compartments make 6 missiles.

Just my insightful thoughts, not sure if it increases radar detection more with this missile rails on the inter part of the doors.

I'm reading comments in other forums of how deep the bay is. Can't they pyramid stack them?.

The bay is unlikely to be that deep, even if it was, its a risk. If the first missile jams and can't be dropped, the other two are now trapped and useless.

I find it disappointing that the J20 can only hold 4 PL12s in its main bay.

If that is the case, I hope that the ramjet PL21 is slightly smaller to allow them to pack 6 into the main bay.

Well if those dummies are the size of a PL-12, it's hard to believe they would design it having wasted that much space in the bay. If you compare both sides there are elements missing or moved you don't see in the side with the missiles. Obviously it can be configured differently.

How do you mean?

I don't think there is all that much space, if there was enough clearance to squeeze in another missile, I'm sure they would have done so.

I think the length would be as much of an issue as the width, if they cannot offset one missile so the fins don't overlap, they would need additional width to fit all the missiles in side by side.
