All missile bodies except ramjets are pretty much all exact matches of each other. This new missile looks to be wider and longer than the PL12.

If it keeps the same (or a near identical) body/width ratio then that would explain how PL-12 superimposes over it so perfectly, but we have no way of reliably telling if it is that much longer and wider. I could only be by a measure of a few centimetres and that would make all the difference but at this distance without a fixed variable like J-20s length or dimensions of the weapons bay, I feel a bit stuck

to my eyes this missile is different from the PL-12, much closer to the missile we see on the J-11B, PL-15 as Deino call it

different nose cone, wider diameter, different fins
J-20 sidebay fits a PL-10 which is 3 metres long, if this missile is a cropped version of a PL-12, which is 3,8 metres long there is a bit discrepancy, because that means the main bay is slightly over 25% longer than the side bay, while from what we have seen it is probably closer to around 30% longer

that is a lot of conjectures anyway

Two more ... and I think I need to correct my first estimation; the new AAM has the same size to the PL-12 but different fins and a new nose-cone !

Nail in the coffin for the fighter-bomber theory? Bay doesn't look deep enough for anti-ship missiles.

Yep, it's looking more likely 2 pl-12 class weapons per bay. That being said, pl-12 is, dimensions wise, a whole new class compared to aim-120. I used the available dimensions for both and calculated the volume - pl-12 body is whole 40% more voluminous than aim-120 body.

In the long run, with newer versions of the missile (this one version on j20 perhaps being one of them) that extra volume may indeed offer some interesting advantages over the amraam in certain scenarios.

Hmm...it could be that those dummy missiles aren't a representation of any of the known missiles. They just have the usual proportional dimensions of these missiles.

Except their aspect ratio and size makes a very compelling case for them being the PL-12.

It may have the proportional dimensions of the PL-12, but so is most other type of missiles. It's difficult to measure the size of the dummy missiles in the pictures with reasonable accuracy to tell if it's close to PL-12. Another thing is the dummy missile nose cone is very different with that of the PL-12 missile.
