IMHO... Why can't 2 more fixed missile rails (unlike the side weapon bays moveable rails) be mounted on the middle of the internal opening doors. With the deep internal bays, divided into 2 dividers; one missile rail could be mounted in the middle part of the door; when closed it might fit in between the 2 missiles' middle. With this configuration, 3 missiles in one compartment, with two compartments make 6 missiles.

Just my insightful thoughts, not sure if it increases radar detection more with this missile rails on the inter part of the doors.

Creative idea(not sarcasm. I like the originality of your thought), but I think it puts the doors at risk of damage, from either the blast or turbulence or the weight or everything.

The weapons bay shows it's able to accomodate 6 MRAAM. I have a F-22 model at home and it looks almost identical at the weapons' bay. Of course I'd welcome bashers to say the J-20 COPIED the F-22 or stole it and made a knock-off version.

Its takes tremendous effort and technology to ''copy'' or reverse-engineering in formal terms. I wouldnt say the j-20 is copied, its technological innovation at its peak. I would like to see more tech stuffs on the J-20.

Fine .... As assumed by the psed images already posted, it is indeed a new AAM and these images reveal a lot of additional details as well they rise additional questions:
It’s alone remarkable, since this weapon – sometimes called PL-X-15 – was so far only seen under one J-11B operated by the Special Missile Test unit at Base 14, Dingxing AB.

My first estimation was that the new AAM is a PL-12-based design with new fins to allow internal storage, but following these images, I’m almost sure it is indeed a completele new design featuring a much wider diameter and is even longer than the PL-12.

As such it seems as if (even if only two missile racks now installed in one bay) the J-20 has actually four missile stations in each bay but – and if You look closely – there is one more attachment point for a possible additional third missiles between those two.

In my opinion the J-20 has the capability to carry two of this large PL-X-15 or two of the standard wide-fin PL-12 but most likely up to three missiles with cropped or folding fins like rumoured PL-12C.

Hope for more,
Deino

I personally would think 6 as maximum payload, but playing with the tests and all, they are doing 4 now. I almost have no reasons to believe the J-20 is incapable of carrying 6, especially if all the matters aren't even large enough to be considered a bottleneck.

I would concur, it's a whole new missile, a completely new design. I wouldn't say it's longer than pl-12, the length seems to be about the same, around 3,8 meters. But everything else about it is different. The shape of fins, the size of fins and the diameter of missile. If i'm not wrong, it's diameter is 25cm, or 25% bigger than pl-12.

It's really a huge missile, volume wise. So much so that i expect to see smaller ones, closer to pl-12 in size to come alongside it. It makes sense, though, to have and use two different classes of BVR missiles. Interesting times ahead.

Im almost convinced the "smaller" variant is the PL-12 of certain model, probably already developed, and can be fitted up to 6 at a time, while the big one is PL-15(because we have yet to get words of any new experimental BVR AMRAAM beyond PL-15,PL-21 that are in development) , and PL-15 or the likes of this much bigger missile is for 100km and beyond, or much passed the PL-12 maximum effective distance, which of course warrants everything bigger and longer and heavier, thus incapable of 6(naturally. in fact, I'm quite sure the designers designated the main bay with 6 PL-12 in their minds to start with at the time they conceived the design, and then PLAAF requested/with the predicted trends towards advanced future BVR, they gave enough rooms for future larger weapons for different payloads. If I was the designer, this is something that definitely would have crossed my mind that time because it's not hard to study the F-22 and this conclusion comes out.)

And adding that together, this will put the J-20 in a very lethal position because it's excellent for A2/AD strategies as well as prepared for all ranges of engagement. Combined with AWACS it will have excellent maximum effective range and lethality, although I wonder how that would go against the F-22.

Indeed, but now I wonder where the ramjet "PL-21" comes in, as last we heard it is still an ongoing project.

This "PL-15" had a larger diameter (meaning greater range, radar seeker, bigger motor etc) and will yield a significant advantage over a crop winged PL-12. But would a ramjet PL-21 also offer a significant increase in performance over PL-15? It must, for having two programmes with overlapping performance is a no no for any procurement process. So I wonder if J-30 may soon have three BVRAAM options to choose from, but my question is whether thy will offer substantially different performance.

---

Also I have to say I am helluva surprised that we still haven't seen PAK FAs open weapon bays yet, and that J-20s weapon bay pics came out so clear, so quick

If I recall right, one of F-22's initial designated missions included deep strike, and I wonder if the J-20 is also designated for that already too.

@airsuperiority, totoro retracted and changed his position haha... The latest picture from yesterday seems to show the missile is PL-12 with different wings

The only possibility that it isn't PL-12 is if it is a larger missile with the same body proportions.

It's my sarcasm to the idiots out there lol. To be honest, I'm very content with the J-20 up to this moment. I just wanna see the WS-15 installed and the production model, and I have no reasons to think China didn't develop the coolest fighter in history since the F-22.

If you're married and/or ready to have kids no one's taking you up on that.

I'm single LOL. But of course this gives me more excuses to tell my other half(a female, always) they need BCP, or why I can't use condom..if I do lose ;)

See I've got it all planned out, although technically I know I am still gonna get those Durexes cuz the J-20 won't disappoint her fanboys ;)
