We started hearing about J-10A being sent to training units previously.

This was last year?

Has been going on for a while as a part of the Air Force training modernization efforts. According to Yankee the new training has pluses and minuses. Even though pilots trained under the new program are able to fly very proficiently in a very short period of time, they don’t perform as well in mock combat exercises. Yankee believes that this issue could be addressed by bringing coaches from ETC/STC with plenty of experience intercepting/engaging foreign aircraft.

As you may have noted, I transferred the J-7-unit related stuff to the other thread:

... and since interesting I do the same for J-10A units here:

ETC:
8th AB - Changxing: J-10A (under conversion to J-20)
804th AB - Yiwu: J-10AH + Su-30MK2 (recently transferred PLAN NA 4th NAB)

STC:
130th AB - Mengzi: J-10A (said to have been converted to J-10C)
124th AB - Bose/Tianyang: J-10A

NTC:
36th AB - Wendeng: J-10A (said to have replaced J-7G)
35th AB - Gaomi: J-10A (? - status unconfirmed)

CTC:
43rd AB - Datong-Huairen: J-10A
70th AB - Tangshan/Zunhua AP: J-10A
Shijiazhuang FA 2nd TB - Yongji: J-10A (said to have replaced J-7II)

Any corrections welcome!

Hey fellows

J-10 was updated from batch 4 on. One of these upgrades was Data Link. Is this the same datalink used currently and in common with the J-10B/C and other PLAAF aircraft? Also did the J-10 have any datalink at all before batch 4?
Instead of batch, the article you quoted is from Yankee use the term: "Upgrade"
And datalink was added to J-10 on upgrade 3
Upgrade 1: Finish testing at the end of 2005. Capability: PL-12, LS-500J(Ground guided), TK-10A hamlet PL-8B off-boresight launch.
Upgrade 2: VHF/UHF on the back, enhanced EW suite. 2009 National Day parade participation.
Upgrade 3 AKA J-10A: Improved KLJ-3 radar. Target pod integration. Dual rack for PL-12. Data Link.

Regarding your question, the article mentioned J-10 is equip with 1553B data bus.
Anyone familiar with PLAAF know anything about the compatibility of 1553B data bus with J-10C/J-20 data link?

Is it possible the J-10As are being upgraded to Bs or Cs?
Unlikely. Would require new air intake and shoehorning in an IRST. It does seem some J10As are getting new air-cooled AESA radars, which would certainly be a big improvement, but why then so few brigades (3) left with J-10A whils there are still several J-7 brigades, apparently?

China actually has more twin engine Flankers and J-20’s than single engine J-10’s. This is the opposite of the US that has more single engine fighters rather its the F-16 or the F-35 than twin engine fighters like the F-15 or the F/A-18. And most NATO countries don’t even have twin engine fighters just the single engine F-16 or F-35. It makes sense since singel engine smaller fighters are cheaper to procure and to operate. China should have invested in developing a long range bomber and have fewer Flankers and more J-10’s in her fleet.

The fleet in my view should have been two thirds J-10’s and one third being J-16’s and J-20’s. But China lacks long range strike platforms and the H-6 is showing its age so China has to compensate with Flankers.

???

Your view is wrong (and on many points), and I can even confidently say that most older members also share that judgement of mine.

Also, gonna be overall lazy and not do a more detailed on why you are (although in short, and most importantly, take a look at flight distance/radius of the flankers vs J10 and then compare that with China as well as possible areas around China where these fighter jets might fight, and then maybe also consider how much armament/weapons they can carry vs eachother).
