According to a J-11A driver participating in the PLAAF "Golden Helmets" competition, the J-10A is better in BVR and equivalent in WVR.

You sure it's not the other way around? I'd think that given their similar level of avionics but with the Flanker's greater size and larger radar that in BVR, the J-10A could at best be equal but in WVR, J-10A may be superior due to the smaller size and nimble delta canard design.

For J-11B, possibly, but for J-11As, the low-tech Soviet radar would render it horribly crippled going up against the modern radars of the J-10A.

J-11A only has twist cassegrain radar and Soviet-era's avionics, where as J-10A has slotted array radar and newer avionics.

Wow!! I didn't know that they never bothered to upgrade J-11A! I assumed that they would have done some sort of upgrade to bring the tech at least on par with J-10A. Do these frames have enough life left for an upgrade to be worth it? Could they bring them up directly to J-10C/J-11D standard?

I think the Russians offered J-11/11A N001VEP+Pero upgrade but PLAAF instead got Belorussian help and got R-77 compatibility with existing N001. That probably saved them a lot of money. Remember The original J-11 deal was for locally built Su-27SK which never had R-77 compatibility.

I don't see any future upgrade for the J-11/11A. Even worse are the older Su-27SK.
