J-10 Thread IV

Ähhhm ... another option: What about Jane's being wrong ?!

It's possible.

But does that match up with China's capabilities and its ambitions?

Remember the US will have 400 stealth fighters by 2020, and will be adding more than 100 every year.

So China building 36 J-20 every year seems modest in comparison

I wouldn't be surprised if most resources were focused on J-20. Provided it's actually a competent 5th gen fighter, there's good reason to completely scale back other fighters and focus on J-20 to help get that price down. Even with interim engines since they're good enough and having J-20s is better than squadrons of J-10s.

I can see that happening at CAC.

But the Flankers being produced at SAC are more useful because they are long range and can accompany the J-20 as a missile truck at a minimum.

Not all of them will be stationed around China though. I don't think there is enough infrastructure to simultaneously support over 500 fifth gen fighters in the Asia Pacific region (discounting the carrier based variant of course).

If they were to make a J-10D, I'd expect them to do something similar to what Boeing did for Silent Eagle and the stealthified super hornet. Change the radome (if an AESA can be made for the new shape), maybe add drop away pylons and missile cases. Let's see if there really is such a thing.

It's actually a photo of a Japanese project. Like the ATD-X and certain other things made, it censors sensitive areas.

If indeed J-10 D has enhanced low observeability features, then I fully expect PAF to induct it in the next few years after JF-17 Block-III induction is stabilized.

F-16 in PAF is on its way to becoming a legacy combat plane and if I am not wrong, it shall begin to be retired in about 10 years. To fill the requirement for medium weight single-engined multirole fighter, I expect J-10 induction to begin in 4-5 years' time.

PAF F-16s at minimum still have 20 odd years left in them, they are not going anywhere in 10 years time frame, IMHO. If things stabilize and differences get worked out between Pak and US Gov't over Afghanistan, do expect to see induction of more used F-16 in PAF ( after MLU or Upgrade. ).

Now this doesn't mean if allowed to export that the PAF may not opt for some advance variant of J-10 if it seems that it fits its requirement. I think that things will make more sense once the JF-17 Block III specs are made available. PAF will not setup a whole new infrastructure for a new Plane if it provides slight margin to what they have now ( F-16s ) or that it may have with the JF-17 Block III.
