you should take a look at this clip on the section on J-10

It's an interview with vice commander of the PLAAF (this could be the wrong translation)
it starts at around 31:10 minutes and lasts for more than a minute (this could be erroneous, since I think the time tracker is a little messed up)
it says that the avionics is about the same as F-16
it says it has really good flight performance
it can take off in 350 meters
it has 11 hard points
and payload of 6 tonnes.

he also talked about 4th generation fighter development, saying that it will have its first flight soon and probably has 8 to 10 years before achieving IOC. I think it will probably be equipped in a regiment before then, because even now KJ-200 still isn't considered to have achieve IOC (at least that was one of the news after the national parade).
Yes, the guy is the deputy commander of the PLAAF, and he said that the 4th generation fighter will have its maiden flight soon and will enter service in 8 to 10 years.

This, along with the claim that a 200 tonne transport will be completed by the end of the year make me wonder if this is all a grotesque dream.

I believe the 200 tonne class transport prototype (or mock up?) would be SHOWN before the end of this year, but would still be a few years until it's first flight most likely.

And "soon" can mean a month to a few years, so I don't think it's that unrealistic for the 4th gen fighter to have it's first flight within two or three years. And there's been a bit of speculation it may enter service around 2015, and so 8-10 years is 2017-2019 which if anything is a dissapointment.

I think it's a bit harsh to call it a grosteque dream.. :(

Question:IOC (on wikipedia) calls it "is the state achieved when a capability is available in its minimum usefully deployable form", so does that mean the KJ-200 isn't deployable... minimally? Cause they have two or three of them, and they were shown at the parade (and most if not all of the weapons shown were all known of for a good while, and probably all operational to an extent), so is this a difference in Western IOC and PLA IOC?

Or is it really that the KJ-200 isn't minimally operational?
in service or whatever phrase you want to use. Basically, they converted an active regiment fully to using the new jet. In KJ-200, the regiment using it was only converted recently, not sure if it's filled up yet and the level of operation they have reached.

8 to 10 years from now is 2017 to 2019, how can that be a grotesque dream? When did you think China's 4th gen fighter will be in service by?

I agree; even with the last statement (but also on my side).

I think, we've seen many surprises during the last years and an unexpected (albeit surely wellcome) openess .... but can anyone assume, in which timeframe he speaks ?? When he says "will enter service in 8 to 10 years", then that about 2017-2019 and regarding the time required to test such a type, a "maiden flight" should occur very soon .... and that's yet another surprise, since most of us expected this only in about 4-5 years.

Does this mean the XXJ or another design ???

Over at fyjs there's a small article posted on a thread of a J-10 test pilot interview that says there was actually a study done on the J-10 for carrier take-off and landing. So if they wanted to navalized the J-10 it wouldn't be that hard to do.

Take the first number and the fourth number to create a digit. In this case, it would be 35. Subtract that with 11 to get the actual division number.

In this case, the plane belongs to the 24th Division.

2nd digit refers to the regiment in that particular division.

The 3rd and 5th digits refer to the unit number. In this case, the 51th plane.
Thanks for that

By Farhan Bokhari in Islamabad

November 10 2009 08:16 | Last updated: November 10 2009 09:57

China has agreed to sell Pakistan at least 36 advanced fighter jets in a landmark deal worth as much as $1.4bn, according to Pakistani and western officials.

Beijing will supply two squadrons of the J-10 fighter jet in a preliminary agreement that could lead to more sales to Pakistan in the future, said a Pakistani official.
