You are correct, seem to be 3..5.-numbers from the 24. Division!

After cleaning up the image its still bit hard to read, but looks like 30551. There was a post from someone who explained how to read these numbers, like the division it belong to and the number of fighters....but I cant find it anymore. Any veterans care to re-explain how to analyze these numbers again?

Probably. Engine shroud is composed of those two sections, should only be one section if it's WS-10A right?

If u check out WS-10a thread. There is a picture of FWS-10 engine in China aviation museum which shows 2 sections. It claim it main purpose is equipping J-10.

So the different between FSW-10 and AL-31FN is getting more confused.

As someone pointed out FSW-10 and WS-10a are both different engines to suit different aircraft of J-10 and J-11B. Actually I already suspect FWS-10 might already start equipping J-10. If not, where did Chengdu get the engines for its continuing J-10 production? Actually all the while J-10 watcher might have mistaken FWS-10 as AL-31FN.

In any case, it's not the WS-10a we see on the J-10. The WS-10 and 10a have different shrouds...unless they changed the WS-10A's shroud too?

Take the first number and the fourth number to create a digit. In this case, it would be 35. Subtract that with 11 to get the actual division number.

In this case, the plane belongs to the 24th Division.

2nd digit refers to the regiment in that particular division.

The 3rd and 5th digits refer to the unit number. In this case, the 51th plane.

I would guess historical baggage. e.g. the original numbering system only had one digit for the division, as the fledgling PLAAF never thought it would have more than 9 divisions. Then, when it needed more numbers, it tacked on an extra digit, but didn't want to mess with the existing numbering order.
