Ummm, is that a cell phone where the rear view mirror would be?

What kind of number is that at the bottom rear of the canopy rim? Does it mean this is the 408th J-10A in service?

it is more likely it denotes fourth batch, eight plane. 6th batch had 40 planes, earlier ones should have less.

It did occur to anyone that the device attached to the canopy, could be a video camera or a cell-phone?

Com'on guys. It is the actual mirror itself, albeit a thick one... No fighter pilot would stick a cell phone to his canopy. That's just stupid.

You mean that GPS or Mobile attached to the canopy? To be honest, I was hoping some new HMS/HMD...

I think some J-10s do have a new generation of HMS. This picture is from November of the past year

could be a cell phone, you know for taking videos for CCTV. Those cockpit video has to come from somewhere.

that whole table doesn't make too much sense to me. why produce j10b and j10a at the same time for so long? three years of 16 planes per year is serial production, not any kind of small batch series for testing. how come j20 is going to be produced 4 per year starting with this year? no known a/c development programme had anything similar.

at best, we can hope for two more prototypes this year, last one taking off just before the end of year. then last three prototypes in 2014. that would make it 7 flying prototypes which is most common number for new a/c development programmes. then maybe in 2015., IF everything goes perfectly to plan, a small preproduction batch, 4 or so planes. Maybe a bigger batch of 8 or so in 2016. and then in 2017. serial production for combat units of plaaf. meaning IOC in 2018., at the earliest. There is just no way 12 planes are going to be online for any sort of testing or development by 2015.

Frankly, that casts shadow of doubt not only on the remaining details in the table but on similar tables we've seen here in the past. Of course, if i am reading the whole table completely wrong, that is a different matter.

For taking cockpit videos, they have dedicated mini cameras to do that. It's hard to believe as loaded as the PLAAF, they use personal cell phones to take videos in their fighter jets. Plus, cell phone is dangerous. What if someone accidentally captured something that is classified and thought they had deleted the photo, but later lost the phone or traded the phone for a better one. That means the classified info is now out in the open. I would bet cell phone is absolutely prohibited in or around the planes.

It looks like it has a purpose made metal clip to attach it to the mirror. The device itself also look pretty robust and bulky and atypical of your standard consumer electronics. It all looks pretty custom made and not at all jury-rigged, not that I think PLAAF pilots would be allowed to jury-rig non-standard equipment onto their fighters anyways.

It looks a little too elaborate to be just a cell phone rigged to take those self portraits we had seen pilots make of themselves when they are flying. Best guess is that it is the latest compact military hand held Beidou Satnav device, maybe with better accuracy or important additional features to what the in-built integrated GPS/Beidou navigation system offers.

The first J10s have been flying for quite some years now, so it would not be unusual for their avionics to be showing its age a little, especially compared to new built late blk J10s and J11Bs. This could be a cheap but effective way to give the older birds a quick boost in certain systems before they are scheduled to receive a major mid-life upgrade.
