J-10 from Chengdu Military region with new missile racks?
View attachment 6656

Good find!

Not exactly new racks as we have seen them in model form on the J10 gate guardian for some time now, and there have been pictures of them doing aerodynamic testing with it at CAC, but this is the first picture I have seen of them in operational use.

Here is the picture of them first testing these out.

J-10 piloted by Li Feng scored 7:1 victory against sino-flanker variants in a recent aerial combat exercise. The SAC needs to get its acts together.

This was just something posted on Chinese bbs that CCTV 7 reported the following.

中央七台军事报道,空军某师驾驶歼十的红军部队釆用新战法7:I战胜了驾驶某新型3代机的蓝军,看的电视,没法提供链接

It seems to corroborate with what we've been hearing from the Dingxin exercises this year. Especially with the newspaper article. You don't get Golden helmet for average performance in these things. From the terminology new variant of third generation fighter jet, It's probably either J-11A or J-11B. It seems like the new ECM pod that J-10A is carrying is really powerful in these encounters based on the newspaper article.

Interesting, guess it would probably be too much to hope that someone has a picture of the new ECM pod? I wonder if it looks anything like the underwing semi-integrated ones we seen on the J10B.

7:1 sounds like quite a landslide victory. Considering that if this was against J11Bs, then they should have pretty much equivilant radar and avionics, and assuming the pilots are of similar quality, the difference would thus appear to be the J10 airframe design. That would be quite an achievement against the still mighty Flanker design.

I know I sometimes give SAC a lot of flak, but it's hard to credit that even they would be so bad as to not achieving at least some improvements over the J11A with the J11B. If we accept that assumption, then the J10A would enjoy a big advantage over everything except maybe the latest Su35s and maybe the MKI. The J10B is rumoured to be a big step up from the J10A in A-A.

If China ever clear the J10A or B for export, they might really cause a stir when detailed specs are released for them and/or if they take part in a serious competition.

I was under the assumption that the picture of the two J-10As with twin racks, had the new ECM pods on their outer pylons (not sure if finless SRAAM/PL-8 though ,but doesn't quite look like it imo)

There was talk over on CDF about the possibility that the pilots could have been of different quality/experience, that flanker victories are underreported, or the flankers were far older variants (i.e.: non J-11B, or MKK). But it is a slightly worrying trend that J-11s seem to be consistently whooped in exercises, by both PLAAF fighters and that exercise with turkish F-4s a while back. I also find it interesting that there seems to be few explicit accounts of how J-11Bs perform.

Personally I'd take the potential implications of these report with generous sprinklings of salt.
