We forgot the twin-engined ones.

Actually I think the quantity purchased could be used to fill for a series of other items as well, from export orders of J-10s to Pakistan to domestic maintanence of Su-27, J-11, J-10A, or other series of earlier orders that's been made but the delivery has yet to be fulfilled.
AL-31FN can't be fitted onto Su-27 and J-11.

123 units aren't a lot when you look at how many aircraft in the PLAAF inventory were using them prior, and considering some are twin-engined . Hopefully this order is the last batch of Al-31F to be ordered. While the units would be sufficient for 3-4 years before with plawolf's estimation, I'd say the units are only sufficient for 2 year's "supply" of engines. Some might even be put in the freezer as backup systems..? (forgive my ignorance if they don't do that)
There's no need. China can pretty much manufacture and replace every component on the AL-31.

OMG HOW DARE YOU DISAGREE WITH ME!!! NOW I WILL FIND EVERY SINGLE BIASED AND IRRELEVANT SOURCES TO BACK UP MY ARGUMENT!!! lol doesn't that sound like all those members you guys had to deal with all the time?

anyways thanks for pointing that out.

Inlet re-design would only be needed if the new engine is significantly more powerful than the old one/ what the airframe was designed to take.

Since the J10B got a new DSI, it could also be that the DSI was designed with both AL31 and WS10A in mind.

What would be more interesting is to know if the WS10A is backwards compatible on J10As without needing significant re-design on the airframe.

My guess would be 'no' at this point, or else CAC would not have needed to place such a large new engine order with Russia.

I do wonder if we'll see future variants of J-10s and J-11s be fitted with future and newer, more powerful variants of the engine, such as perhaps a J-10X or something fitted with WS-10G(or H), or even WS-15 in the future.

India is not dependent on Russia, they can pick and choose from whatever arms supplier they desire (including now also the US), as they have done profusely. Just look at the strange mix of Russian, German and French submarines that forms India's submarine force. It is rather Russia that is seeking to keep India as close as possible as a major ally, especially now that the US has entered the fray of course.

I have little doubt that Russia, like India, views Pakistan as an adversary (they have been on opposite sides in Afghanistan for 30 years or more). So I persist in thinking that Russia had to convince the Indians - actually you mention Monmahan Singh's voyage to Moscow - that the FC-1 would have no effect on the balanced (or rather disbalance) between Pakistan and India.

Most of India arms is still from Russia. So Russia sells engine to Pakistan and India retaliate by not buying any Russian military hardware and all their Mig-27/23 , Su30MKI, Carrier and T-90S tank can stop working without support and spares from Russia. Is that the scenario Indian want?

And yr so called western stuff is so expensive for a developed countries like India. India is now trying to switch to western stuff but it will take time , probably a decade to switch to mostwestern equipment. Right now it can't afford to do that.

Russia do not need India permission to export their equipment to whoever. Yr persist on Russia seeking India permission is laughable. If Russia has so much respect for India then why they keep increasing the cost of refurbish the carrier overwriting previous contract with no respect. Russia do what they think suit them unless the country has any leverage on them, right now India do not hold any upper hand over Russia. They can only stare and look how Russia their biggest ally sell military equipments to a country that may go into war with them anytime....

Almost definitely -- future variants of J-10 and J-11 (if PLAAF wants to continue with the latter) will get heavier, just about all variants of existing aircraft get heavier. Larger thrust engines will be required to power them, unless you are willing to sacrafice kinematics.

In a sense, India is a sucker for Russian weapons too much that the Russians have been selling them Tier 2 quality of the same product..

Seems like PLAAF has finally attained the same level of competence in terms of hardware vs their Western counterparts. J-10B comparable to EF/Rafale in a sense J-20 with F-22, J-11 with F-15s and Su-30s..Now I guess soon we'll see new bombers, transport, AEW rolling out...as well as a new breed of pilots with soon-to-be newest training programs..

Correct. A modern fighter jet from top to bottom . From designer to operational status. Everything can be 100% indigenuous. Same as US, France and Russia and UK.

Well I woudlnt' go that far to say "competence", but we can say that the PLAAF finally has comparable fighter aircraft either in service or advanced development compared to similar USAF aircraft.

In AEWC the PLAAF have the technology, they just need platforms to build on. The next big challenge after developing a stealth fighter is developing a large and medium aircraft/transport, not only for airlift but AEW&C/special mission and tankers...
Similar challenges will arise with larger bombers, but thankfully they don't have a massive need in this area.
