Well the PLAN actually doesn't have that many flankers. Aside from the J15, all they had were a batch of 24 mk2s, and they are for strike missions mainly. The PLAAF has gotten all the j11s, and the PLAN has been relying on j8s and j7s as their primary fighter cover.

The J10 has been consistently reported to be so superior to J11a in combat that the PLAN may well be willing to live with the shorter range, which could be addressed with inflight refueling anyways, so its not that much of an issue.

The other possibility is that CAC is working on a naval J10, and the PLAN are getting some now to aid with the conversion and pilot training.

The two possibilities are not mutually exclusive.

Ok, thanks.
What I was getting at was the question: Does the PLANAF want to provide for it's own air cover then even in the costal region with land based fighters, were the PLAAF should be able to do that job?
On the other hand I think I can see the advantage of having air cover for naval operations integrated within the navy.

Regarding Serbian Air Force tender for new fighter, latest news is that so far demonstrations were made by US F-16 and F-18, french Dassault Rafale, latest versions of russian MiG-29 and Su-30, Eurofighter, and from China JF-17 and J-10. By the end of January there will be made an shortlist of 3 or 4 contenders that have shown best performance and then that list will be subjected to economical and political analysis. This is statement made by Brigadier General Ranko Zivak, commander of the Air Force in his latest interview to "Odbrana" (Odbrana = Defence) magazine.

If you ask me the shortlist will be:

F16, Mig29, SU30, J10 and JF17... The winner will be either mig29 or JF17.

I used following data:
unemployment and the large national current account balance deficit remain continuous political and economic problems.

Enthusiasts like me are hoping for J-10. Winner of contest will also get a job to participate in modernization of domestically built jet trainers G-4, so that cockpits in trainers would be more compatible with new fighter. This task would require limited transfer of technology.
It is interesting that SAAB did not want to compete with its Gripen, although our Air Force showed much interest in this aircraft.

I do not think the serbs would like to have american components knowing their history... But they would love to try them.

I think China want to strengthen PLANAF power, indeed, PLANAF power is not that good, so many J-7,J-8, finally, J-10 will replace J-7.
the latest patch J-11BS will service PLANAF, to strengthen PLANAF anti ship capability, PLANAF only has 24 Su-30mk2.
PLANAF has many JH-7A, it is good air strike capability but not good for air combat.
as soon as more J-11BH and J-10 service in PLANAF, J-7,J-8 will step to retire.
J-10 is much better combat and intercept capability for PLANAF, and it has some air strike capability.
Taiwan also use F-16 for some sea air strike mission.

This is about military systems, PLAN should be able to separate the command, to a certain extent, independent tasks, so that can improve operational efficiency, some time they need PLAAF help, but not all time.
