It is probably too late now to do something meaningful. Like it or not, ISIS and other Islamists groups are now reasonable well trained, and what is more important they have enough knowledge and skill to train new recruits . Those defectors from French FL and others were significant in the beginning when Jihadi organizations didn't have many members with formal military training (especially Western professional training ) . Now, after years of fighting , they have become self-sustained war machine difficult to stop .

Considering this is an active conflict involving almost a dozen countries and major factions it would be helpful to have a territory/area of influence/area of operations map for reference. Does anyone know if there are any good ones out there? Preferably regularly updated?

I do not think Japan (Samurais) will be involved with ground troops as its current Constitution does not allow this. Besides it would be foolish to do so as their Army is not ready or familiar with insurgency warfare. Japan will continue with their promised humanitarian aid to the victims of ISIS in the ME. The Japanese are expected to take seriously the threats by small groups of islamic extremists carrying out attacks on its mainland. The threats were recently issued by ISIS as Japan is committed to the Anti-ISIS Coalition Forces thru' its giving of aid. There are Islamic militant proxies in South and South-East Asia who may be willing to do the dastardly work for MONEY and their so called "warped religious beliefs". All countries in the Asian Region have to be very cautious threats/inroads made by ISIS. Like our Forces they can carry out conventional warfare ops as well as insurgencies, as shown in the Syris & Iraq (ISIS) & Nigeria (Boko Haram). The serious problem is also the enemy within the country as China, Europe and Australia experienced. As for Japan, the former Japanese "Red Brigade" operatives in the 1970s provide lessons to learn.

Captured Jordanian pilot had been apparently burned alive by ISIS . New level of savagery by islamists and an attempt to intimidate airmen performing airstrikes on them .
Islamic State video purports to show Jordanian pilot burnt alive

(Reuters) - Islamic State militants released a video on Tuesday purporting to show a captive Jordanian pilot being burnt alive, and Jordanian state television said he was murdered a month ago.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the video, which showed a man resembling the captive pilot standing in a black cage before being set ablaze.
