Iraqi President Jalal Talbani said on June 27 that Beijing has agreed to sell weapons to the country’s fledgling police force.

“We have signed an agreement to buy Chinese weapons for our police at a cheaper price,” Talabani told reporters on his return from a week-long visit to China, without providing further details.

Iraq’s police are frequent targets of a Sunni-led insurgency engulfing the country since the downfall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Talabani also said Beijing had agreed to cancel some of the $8 billion worth of debt accrued by Saddam Hussein’s regime, but it was not immediately clear how much the deal involves.

Beijing has also agreed to train around 600 Iraqi science professionals, said Talabani, who stopped off in Tehran before returning to Iraq.

China wants to resurrect oil supply agreements signed with the previous regime and develop an oil field in southeast Iraq.
Talabani was the first Iraqi head of state to visit China since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1958.

Hmm... any further news on what sort of weaponry is being sold? I would presume that one of the AK variants would be most pragmatic... though I have to admit I don't know how reliable the 95 is in a harsh climate.

Not just police, Iraqi navy main patrol boats are also supplied by China, paid by the United State of America.

They were ordered by Saddam but not delivered, the new Iraq government doesn't have the money so US paid for them.

Well considering that China was upgrading Iraq with fiber optic cable under the previous regime. China is likely to sell ammo for all their small arms RPG's, IFV's, APC's, MBT's and SPG's. Look at Kuwait with all thier oil money they bought China's newest self-propelled gun over the US and European SPG's. Basically anything the Iraqs could want they can get. It is most likely that the Iraq's will be looking to purchase Chinese APC's and other Mech equipment because of the shear unit price and availability. US manufacturiers are already stretched keeping up with US military demand and the price is going to go up with that kind of demand.

speaking of China supplying Iraqis with weapons, which the Americans so bluntly accuse without any concrete evidence, the United States themsleves are arming the terrioest near the western border of China near Talijisktan and Tibet.

The United States purpose of suppling/supporting the terroist which have caused mayhem withing Chinese Border is to urge these terriost to want freedom. This issue of blaming everything on China is getting kind of old when the United States is indirectly supporting terroist near China.

There are many evil people around the world, you may hate them. But as long as they stop doing evil or don't expand that evil, that's fine. Trying to remove the evil may end up with more evil things.

Who may I ask is the "Evil" in your post and since when was China "eroding" US influence around the globe. Last time i checked, it was the United States who is causing all the border nations around china to revolt against the mainland, not China causing other nations relationship with the United States

This article just silly,Really in all seriousness China does not want to see a failed Iraq as it would be bad for them economically and not to mention suplying weapons that end up killing American soldiers is not going to help them get on good terms with the US as everubody knows this. Also wouldn't doing this harm relations with other nations in the Middle East. In addtion Islamic fundies pose a threat to China currently and in the future most likely as well.

I don't think china whats the piss off the U.S. by supplying its enemies with weapons, that could mean another cold war between the U.S. and china. and though china has a bigger military it lacks the equipment to be a superpower. :coffee:

the biggest problem the U.S forces are facing besides the EFP IED supplied by iran and syria is the new warheads they are putting on the RPG-7 and the deployment of the RPG-29. also Metis-M and Kornet are being used in larger numbers but this is not being annouced by the DoD. Some cases of Metis-M hits are being reported as EFP IED hits.

I dont see the PRC aiding the insurgancy in any way. no reports of PRC weapons systems in Iraq.
