IRIN Commander Khanzadi has announced that construction of the 3000 ton "
Besat" submarine will begin this (Iranian) year.
This follows the successful commissioning of the first
Fateh-class (530 ton) submarine into the IRIN in 2019 and successful recent domestic repairs/modernization of the Russian Kilo-class submarines (2300 ton).
Besat will thus be the largest submarine (by displacement) in Iran's possession once completed, and it is expected that construction will take 4-5 years.
Features of Besat-class submarine:
- 3000 ton displacement (surfaced)
- Dimensions: 75m length; 8m width
- Brushless electric motors
- Vertical missile launch
- Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP)
- Advanced interior coatings
- 6x 533mm torpedo tubes (capable of firing Valfajr torpedo & 300km Qader AScM, possibly via Jask-3)
Compared to Fateh-class submarine (in service):
- 530/600 ton displacement (surfaced/submerged)
- Dimensions: 43.5m length; 4.5m width
- Maximum depth: 250m
- Endurance: 35 days
- 4x 533mm torpedo tubes (capable of firing torpedos & short-range AScM via Jask-2)
- 8 mines
- (AIP - from 4th iteration)
Currently two more Fateh-class submarines are being built and expected to enter into service in the next 1-2 years. A 4th heavily upgraded iteration (with AIP) is planned to follow.
