The slipway wasn't long enough to build the whole hull in one piece. The Italian Warship building industry has never built anything that large before (Garibaldi was a good 10-12,000 tonnes smaller), so the bows of the ship were assembled elsewhere. After launch the two halves of the ship were joined together in a drydock. The rest of the Island was lifted aboard in one huge block as well.

So that's a compromise due to facility limitations?

In a nutshell yes. Extending the slipway for a one off project (relocating the construction hall and workshops in front of the slipway) would have been hideously expensive, but building two thirds of the ship on the slipway and the forward section nearby was not greatly more expensive than building in one piece. Certainly cheaper than the aforementioned shipyard reconstruction.

There are many internet debates around about how Navy X or Y couldn't build better dreadnoughts than they did at the time because of limitations in available Builders slipways and Naval Drydocks. The latter is still tue to an extent but the former is no longer the case. You don't have to build a single ship in a single yard anymore, as proved by the Cavour, the French Mistral class, The RN's Type 45s and CVFs amongst others.

Jeff,
On your page on HMS Illustrious you claim that she will serve until HMS Queen Elizabeth II will be commissioned. This has been changed by the current UK government to 2014 in order to save money.

Unfortunately this is the case. Flying in the face of common sense and experience, The ConDems have decided Illustrious will stay in service only until HMS Ocean completes her last refit in 2014, and the 'Big O' will have to hold the line until 2016-18 when HMS QE completes (without cats and traps under current planning for the first few years of service, thus being the worlds largest LPH). HMS Prince of Wales will complete with cats and traps in 2019. Everything else you read is just speculation at this point.

So, from 2014 until 2019 or 2020 before the UK can effectivel project power again.

The UK is relegating its naval forces for the next several years to be but a shadow of their former selves. Building the QE to act as a huge LPH is about as rediculous and limp wristed a move as I have seen in my fifty five years of life as regards major naval acquisitions and expenditures.

Getting rid of the Harriers and decommissioning all of the Invincibles leaves the UK with no ability to adequately project and protect power on their own for several years...too many years IMHO. I predict some one, some where will attempt to take advantage of the lapse.

Hope I'm wrong.

If the right people come to power in the UK somewhere in the 2014-2016 time frame, perhaps a few J-35Bs can be acquired or loaned to the UK so the QE has an airwing. That could work until cats and traps are installed.

No angled deck? Why?
She is a multipurpose LPH/CVL. She will use STOVL aircraft only for air defense and strike...Harriers now, JSF later. She is an impressive vessel despite some of the tradeoffs made for her intended missions.

Here's her deck:

And here's the general config (very similar to the later updates to the Invinsible class decks...only bigger):

No angled deck? Why would they not design her with an angled deck?

I remember talking about that with respect to the Illustrious class with the then UK naval attache in The Hague in 1974. He defended it, and I was to ignorant to give the following reply: How much more would it cost to have an angled deck and how much will the ordnance cost that will have to be dropped into the sea because you can't bring it home?
