So it appears my speculation was correct. India performed a test and the newer missile malfunctioned and flew into Pakistan.

This however is India's best and safest excuse. It could have been done with the intention to hit some target or to get Pakistan to respond and show the Indian observer platforms (whatever SIGINT it has around) how the Pakistanis respond to an airspace intrusion... how long they take, what they use, the SOPs, number of forces and platforms brought into action, and so on.

This shouldn't be taken lightly by Pakistan at all. At best it's a blatantly irresponsible move by India to test so close to a hot zone. At worst the Indians wanted to prod Pakistan into revealing how it acts when an intrusion occurs. Do they move to intercept or mobilise air assets or use short range AD or long range etc.

It is a state of the art asset though, the best in their arsenal and the pride of IAF. Would they risk it falling into enemy hands just so that they could "gauge enemy response"?

One other thing is that there is tremendous face loss over failed missile test, especially after it crashes into enemy territory.

This is true and a good point I wanted to ignore earlier on because we don't know the details of the missile. It may have been an actual attempt at another "surgeekal strike" on some target they consider worth hitting. India often initiates strikes too out of the blue.

If it was all intentionally done to "gauge enemy response" then they wouldn't have let this missile be filled with anything sensitive. Perhaps a warhead on board that is to detonate? or self destruction mechanism of some sort to prevent retrieval and any sort of gathering of intel on the weapon. Perhaps that failed to do its job. Or if not present, then the platform may not be a secretive thing and just any typical Brahmos they assumed would be too wrecked for the Pakistanis to retrieve worthwhile intel from. They're not exactly wrong there. From the wreck, there's not much to gather on the missile's performance and function.

It makes zero sense to fire a multimillion dollar missile at your enemy to test their response. To my knowledge Pakistan has no anti ballistic missile defences.

Good job this didn't happen during a standoff or it could have gotten ugly.

One rumour I've seen going around is that it was because of disruptions to GLONASS signals.
