That's the most obvious choice but given how long it took them to buy them for their airforce, the carriers will probably be out of commission before they get inducted.

I was thinking F-35Cs, but again that's 3-4x the cost per plane. It would be insane if India really is planning on having 3 carriers. They could also consider used F-18s.

Maybe they can buy some J-15s :D but they will need to be fitted with daily activation codes....

F-35C can’t take off without catapults. If they need F-35 naval variant they might as well as go for F-35B.

Probably testing their new Brahmos NG.

You could think innocent - malfunction and unintended fly into Pakistan.

Or sinister - test out Pak's response and whether they can intercept it. If missile had a target in mind but impossible to know whether it is some Indian adventurism like their 2019 Balakot Strike or whether they didn't want to hit anything of value and just wanted to see how Pakistan would respond. Possibly knowing that Pakistan has new FD-2000 missiles situated on alert there, the Indians have observation assets in the area and wanted to see how the Pakistani FD-2000 units respond to invasion of airspace.
