Just realised it's possible that India's submarine force will drop to 6 or 8 for the near-mid future

Their kilos are undergoing retirement and so will their type 209s, all of which are around 30 plus years old

They might possibly only have the 6 scorpenes left + 2 newer kilos if their submarine procurement doesn't speed up. That's incredibly low. Even Pakistan will have 6 new 039As

Correction ..... 8 039Cs along with 03 Augusta 90Bs (Recently upgraded by Turkish STM)

Further, there are unconfirmed reports that PN is interested or placed an order for 06 units with STM Turkey (STM 500)....

Any news on Kaveri engine? Last I heard Saffron offered to help finish it, so is it dead in the water or not?

I don't think the joint project with Saffron will continue to be called Kaveri. By all accounts it appears to be a completely new engine. They have a real need for domestic engine since CAASTA could choke off F-404 and/or F-414 at the moment's notice.

If Safran is making their military jet engine hot section using US made titanium metal forgings, like the "French" hot section used in the PowerJet SaM146 engine in the Sukhoi Superjet, then India is SoL with CAATSA anyway.
