Re: Indian Fighter Jet purchase

Muffhead, India shall not purchase Chinese aircraft because India and China are military rivals (similar to USA and Iran).

In 1962, a war was fought between these 2 nations in which India lost 38000 sq. kms of territory to China, which India still claims as its own. China also claims 90000 sq. kms of territory as its own, which forms India's northeastern provinces.
India has provided political asylum to the Dalai Lama, who advocates independence of Tibet from China.

Thus, due to territorial and political disputes, trade in military hardware between India and China is not possible.

J-10 may be equivalent to F-16, but as I understand, the information made public about it is very little.

I thought relations had improved quite a bit though.

I see what you are saying though.

Does anyone have any recent news on how the evalutions are going? I think this purchase is pretty exciting.

I heard that Mirage 2000's aren't under consideration anymore because of the plants closing and that now the Dassault Rafale is being looked at, which is interesting because if it was sold to India it would be the first sell of this platform.

India doesn't just fly them, they build them under licence. They also built they only radar equipped version (fitted with the same radar as the Super Etendard) for anti shipping duty.

well, this is from the Russians, they are pretty confident about Mig-35 winning MRCA, I'm not so sure.
ZHUHAI (China). Nov 6 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Federal Service
for Military-Technical Cooperation is optimistic about the MiG-35 jet
fighter's chances to win an upcoming Indian tender to purchase 126
combat airplanes.
"Taking into account the fact that many Indian pilots are used to
Russian airplanes and that the Indian Air Force's entire infrastructure
was adjusted to operate our aircraft, the MiG-35 jet fighter's chances
to win the tender are certainly highly," the service's first deputy
director Alexander Denisov told Interfax-AVN after the Air Show China
2006 closing ceremony on Sunday.
Russia, however, is bound to face stiff competition, he said. "The
U.S. and other countries are beginning to resort to powerful political
support at all levels. Naturally, we are working in this area as well,"
he said.
Asked on the prospects of arms trade with Iran and Venezuela,
Denisov said that the United States is strongly opposed to such
contacts. But, since the UN Security Council has not introduced any
sanctions against these countries, Russia has no grounds to curtail
cooperation with them, he said.
"As far as the issue of arms deliveries abroad is concerned, we
must primarily be governed by our national interests, rather than
somebody's likes and dislikes. Russia mainly sells defensive weapons,
and it by no means seeks to develop any arms race," Denisov said.
India is planning to buy 126 jet fighters for its Air Force. The
Indian authorities are ready to pay approximately $4 billion for all
planes. Russia's MiG-35 will compete with U.S., Swedish and French jet
fighters in the Indian tender.
