Place: Yelahanka Air Base, Bangalore, India
Date: Feb 9 - 13

What began as Avia-India, a modest display of a few aviation assets in 1993, is now set to be a chartbuster in its modern, sleek avatar. The biennial air show, the biggest in Asia, was renamed Aero India in 1998, and has only become better and popular. It's among one of the best-attended air shows around the world.

According to statistics given by the organizers - the Department of Defence Production ( DDP) under the ministry of defence - the online request for registration of general visitors this year has already exceeded the 1.75-lakh mark, 1 lakh more than the official 75,000 footfalls in 2009. The organizers are expecting the figure to reach 2.75 lakh, with enquiries and requests not showing any signs of abating.

The growth in Aero India since 1998 to 2005 was marginal. It began showing a quantum increase in the gross exhibition area only from the 2007 edition. While it hovered between the 7,000-18,000 sqm mark from 1998 to 2005, it rose sharply to 30,000 sqm in 2007 and 44,000 sqm in 2009. This year, the organizers have increased the gross area to 75,000 sqm, a significant 70% increase over 2009.

This edition, there are 675 exhibitors, registering a 16% increase over the last edition, that had 581 in all. As with all previous editions, this time around too, international exhibitors score over domestic ones in terms of participation. In 2009, the gap was marginal, 303 against 289. This time, the figure is 380 and 295, a growth of 25% for international exhibitors, against a mere five for domestic exhibitors.

With 30 countries set to participate this year, including India, official representation from 60 countries number 350, a three-fold plus increase in the number of delegates, both official and business, with USA leading with 250, Germany 35, Italy 10, and 35 from remaining countries.

Based on the online requests for business passes, 70,000 business visitors and delegates will throng the venue, a figure twice that of 2009.

There are eight country pavilions and 63 chalets at the venue. While the exhibition, air show and static display are integral to the air show, the concurrent events include media briefings and press conferences by the defence minister, Chief of Air Staff and exhibitors, business-to-business (B2B) meetings, product launches, technical presentations, workshops on defence acquisition procedures and offsets, including industry round table meetings. With a 62% growth in flight, static and flight-cum-static display by civil and military aircraft over 2009, aviation aficionados can await a visual treat of fighters, helicopters and transport aircraft from both military and civil aerospace sectors, from across the world.

Significantly, with 27 aircraft belonging to the civil aviation sector, it is a 54% representation in relation to the military component, making Aero India 2011 truly an all-encompassing air show. In all, over 100 aircraft would be involved in Aero India 2011. ISRO is also setting up a space stall that is expected to be a major attraction.

Defence minister A K Antony will formally inaugurate Aero India 2011 on Wednesday, at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka.

35 Russian companies to take part in the event

Russia will exhibit over 80 types of weaponry and will be represented by 35 companies at the upcoming Aero India 2011 air show, state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport said in a statement.

Aero India-2011, which will be held in Bangalore during February 9-13, is expected to attract a record number of over 600 manufacturers, vendors, and suppliers from 63 countries.

Russia will be represented by 35 companies, including MiG , Sukhoi, Almaz-Antei and Engineering Design Bureau.

Russia will traditionally promote MiG-35 and Su-35 fighter jets, the Yak-130 combat trainer, two versions of Il-76MD transport plane (with different engines), the Il-78MK aerial tanker and MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB naval fighters.

The Be-200 amphibious aircraft will most likely be one of the top attractions of the Russian exhibit as its popularity with foreign customers steadily grows. The plane could be used in a wide variety of roles, from maritime reconnaissance and rescue to firefighting.

Rosoboronexport and Russian helicopters will show the Mi-28NE attack helicopter, the light multirole Ka-226T and the heavy transport Mi-26. All three helicopters are currently taking part in separate Indian helicopter tenders.

The visitors will also be able to receive information about the Mi-35M combat transport helicopter, the Kamov Ka-31 radar surveillance helicopter and the Ansat and Kamov Ka-32A11BS multi-role helicopters.

The air defence part of the Russian exhibit will be represented by the Tor-M2E, the S-300VM, the Buk-M2E and the Tunguska-M1 systems.

Russia's Engineering Design Bureau will unveil a new ultra short-range air defence system based on the Strelets multiple launcher for the portable Igla missiles.

Russia is the world's second largest conventional arms exporter after the US. In 2010, Russian defence industry companies delivered about $10 billion worth of arms to foreign customers.

India invites China for Aero India 2011

India has decided to invite a Chinese delegation for Aero India in Bangalore starting February 9, a week after that country along with Pakistan and Iran did not figure among the participating countries for the biennial Air Show.

Chinese journalists would now also be allowed to get accreditation to cover the show and officers concerned have been asked to provide full cooperation to them, Defence Ministry officials told PTI here Sunday.

"The External Affairs Ministry gave its clearance for allowing a Chinese delegation to visit the show on Friday and necessary steps are being taken to facilitate their visit," they said.

The Chinese delegation for the show is likely to comprise its military officials based in the capital, they added.

Chinese journalists were barred from covering the show as the Defence Ministry did not keep any slot for China in the list of countries whose journalists could apply online on its website to make them eligible to cover the five-day event

Briefing newsmen on the show last week, Secretary (Defence Production) Rajkumar Singh had said the decision not to invite China was taken on the advice of the External Affairs Ministry.

India had invited China for the 2009 edition of the mega event but none had turned up for the show

Officials had said China, Pakistan and Iran were not considered by the committee concerned which selects countries to be invited for the show.

Relations between India and China of late have been marked by a continuing row over Beijing's visa policy under which residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are given stapled visas instead of the regular stamped ones.

T he situation took an ugly turn last year when China denied a proper visa to the then Northern Army Commander Lt Gen B S Jaswal as he was based in J and K.

Jaswal was intending to travel to Beijing to take part in the Annual Defence Dialogue between the two sides.

India reacted strongly to this and suspended high level defence exchanges but China refuses to relent.

Boeing to unviel stealthier F/A-18 aircraft

Boeing%25E2%2580%2599s+FA-18+Super+Hornet.JPG

A mocked up version of Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet will be among the many metal birds to debut at the upcoming Aero India 2011.

Boeing, which is one of the contenders for the $10 billion medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) contract, will unveil a stealthier version of the F/A-18 at the air show to be held at the Air Force Station Yelahanka between February 9 and 13.

Boeing’s vice president and country head for defence, space and security, Vivek Lal, said that one of the two F/A-18s which will be performing at the bi-annual show will be configured with conformal fuel tanks, enhanced performance engines, spherical missile laser warning, enclosed weapons pad, next generation cockpit and internal infrared search and tracking system.

The mocked up aircraft, which will be unveiled at the Aero India will be the first F/A-18 to be developed as part of the ‘International Super Hornet Roadmap’ programme which was announced by the US-based aerospace company at last year’s Farnborough Air Show in the UK.

Labelled as the next evolution of Block II Super Hornet, the aircraft is said to have features “which increase survivability, situational awareness, and performance for customers”.

Air Force MMRCA Competition Contenders at Aero India 2011

The prestigious $10.2 billion contract to sell India 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) will undoubtedly heat up during the forthcoming Aero-India Show 2011 in Bangalore. The main contenders for the MMRCA race will be highlighting the salient features of their aircraft in full-flight displays at the show during the second week of February.

While the main MMRCA contenders have confirmed their participation at the Aero-India show, only the Russian MiG-35 which is in the MMRCA race will not be showcasing its fighter craft. The Indian defence ministry is currently persuading the Russian contender to make its presence felt at the airshow. While the MiG-35 may not make it to the airshow, a Russian delegation is surely expected in India for Aero-India 2011.

The other five contenders for the MMRCA include Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet, Lockheed Martin’s F-16 Super Viper, Eurofighter’s Typhoon, Dassault Aviation’s Rafale and Saab’s Gripen. Barring Russia, each contender is bringing in two to three aircraft along with elaborate teams and flight simulators for displays since India will make a choice in July this year.

Meanwhile, the US has been doing its sales pitch for the two US fighters that are in the race for the MMRCA. While the US concedes that European fighters are technically brilliant, the US fighters would be a lucrative and worthy option since the US would offer greater transfer of technology and strategic support. In fact, a high-level trade mission from the US led by, the US Commerce Secretary Gary Locke is expected to arrive in India to promote the US fighters. The high-level trade mission will coincide with the Aero-India 2011 airshow in Bangalore in the second week of February and will focus on intensifying Indo-US strategic ties and promote high-technology defence sales between the two nations besides promoting the two US firms for the prestigious MMRCA deal. The US presence will be the biggest with 250 official delegations at the Aero-India 2011.
