Hong-Kong Protests

What is surprising? The place was a British colony for 156 years and after 1997 we had a hands-off approach for a full 23 years without any serious reform of education/media/national security and was open season for foreign money and influence.
For all the criticism that NYPD attracts, I don't think anyone openly celebrated the murder of the 2 police officers in the wake of the Eric Garner killing. This is seriously F'd up thinking, going beyond colonialism...

I don't know anyone who would support such a thing, and my whole family is originally from HK.

Just to add...
I like to think I am not a naive person. There is a time for violence if you really believe in a cause. Especially if the other side is totally open to using violent force against you. However, the police officer didn't even kill this guy, the police force hasn't killed a single rioter... It is really difficult for a sane person to justify such action.

This is why I HATE the western rhetoric so much. "Oppressive regime", "authoritarian rule extended", "death of freedom", etc.
It is true to a certain extent that the NSL is heavy handed, but it's not like anyone executing Jimmy Lai here. What is the natural result of such extreme rhetoric? Extremism (Surprise!)

Nah, totally not surprised. We humans are able to rape, genocide, cut people in many pieces, remove whole civilizations of the face of earth with enough radicalization and fire power. Lone wolves and folks supportive of stabbing in an ex-colonial society is absolutely nothing surprizing. You have to much trust in people morals. That is only a thin facade.

Doesn't NSL grant the Govt the power to seize assets of whosoever is fermenting/supporting violence? This company's assets need to be seized, its executives arrested (their assets seized too) . Anything less and it would be a weak response on Chinas part.

Wow, just wow, no words...

People gathering to mourn a terrorist?
At this point a significant section of HKrs are extremely radicalised. I have no doubt in my mind that if provided with arms, these terrorists would go on a mass shooting spree in HK. The level of hate spewed on online forums, fb etc against China, Mainlanders, police is mind boggling. And western social media companies are aiding and abetting it.

Successive Chinese leaders ignored the growing radicalisation of HK and only Xi had the courage to go ahead and crush these nefarious elements. It'll take atleast a decade or more to completely cleanse HK . The radicalisation is too deep.

As a logical person, it is difficult for me to buy into the BRITAIN WAS SO GOOD TO US mantra. Maybe because I did not live there myself, I don't understand?

As I mentioned, I'm not naive, people will get violent, extremely violent, that's not the surprise. A lone wolf attacker is not the surprise either. What I don't understand is how the younger generation (I am assuming most of the flower bearers are younger people) can just so easily radicalized.

- The CCP did not drone attack Jimmy Lai's birthday party and kill 20 of his family members along with him.
- Anyone 40 and under did not meaningfully live under the colonial system, yet 1/3 of the arrested protestors were minors
- HKPF are not choking protestors to death

So basically the entire generation has been raised in a sort of semi-religious fervor? Did PRC really miss the establishment of American Madrassas on their own soil?
