Boom shield or bar amour is only effective aginst RPG but against not strong ATGM especially with Tandem warhead.

This war has just reached a stalemate

Both sides are wrong and both are equally bad at fighting, which is one reason why the fighting has got out of hand, neither has the capability to finish the job and so will just go on and on

Believe it or not when the USSR invaded Afghanistan the Afghans were equipped from rifles left over form the 3rd Anglo-Afghan war, some of them over 100 years old, no one not even the CIA at the time gave them a chance in hell, but by the end of the first year the Afghans showed even a superpower can bleed

Point is the equipment is a advantage but it's not the be and end all, better overall tactics can bridge the gap between the capability in the equipment, rebels can have it all but as of now they are so divided and so disorganised the infighting will lead them to no where

As for Assad, it is projected by the end of this year his air power will out of aircraft and with no re-supply from Russia he loses his air advantage, this whole thing is one big dirty mess with foreign interest escalating much of the fighting

If this spills over there is going to be a nightmare situation

That was a pretty long shot, seems to be more than 3+km away, not a bad range and not a bad shot if it did hit its target

I wonder if they have ever engaged during night time and if they have ever downed a helicopter, never the less good advertisement for Chinese ATGM

yes civil wars are often quite messy like this with just a mad scramble for power between ruthless warlords and influence from all kinds of foreign puppet masters. it's the people that suffer in the end always. afghanistan is a bit different because a foreign invader naturally unites a country.

hopefully strong leadership will emerge from somewhere in syria and put an end to violence before anything else; a chinese saying that refers to such periods of chaos: 时代造英雄-"it's the times that makes heroes." one does not have to go back very far to find china in a similar if not worse state than syria today.

alternative to assad could even worse.

that i doubt

you know when this all began i was skepical about Assad but after seeing what these lunatics rebels are doing i cant say i still believe that

Assad and his father before him ruled Syria for best part of 6 decades, muslims, christians and jews all lived together, in its history there has never been a time when places of worship were bombed and destroyed people killed and made 2 million refugees

infact under Assads regime Syria was a aid donor even although it was under sanctions, it wasnt perfect but there was security and people just got on with life because life was not bad

under Assad Syria was actually a beautiful country to visit, very modern and much history which was preserved, now its all gone, so Assad must have been doing something right

last year rebels were at the outskirts of Damascus, the city was about to engage in a bitter fight, but then Assads plea to Iran and Russia secured his position and now Homs has been taken back from the rebels

as times goes on the Syrian army actually has held together and now they look to be on the offensive, add to that Hezbollahs entry into the war too

This all hearkens back to the colonial period's unstable native circumstances around the world which were exploited by the colonial powers with a systemic divide and conquer strategy which includes preserving as much native instability, stagnation, and therefore opportunities for exploitation as possible to this day.

In the Middle East native secular nationalists who represented the most promising faction for overall societal growth and development were made the primary targets of the colonial powers as well as native feudal factions such as the monarchies and clergies and their supporters. The founding of Israel and the Arab losses in the various Arab-Israeli wars also proved to be a disaster for the secular nationalists. Syria's civil war marks the final Middle Eastern native secular nationalist government to fall regardless of whether Assad survives in part of the country or not.

Whether the monarchies and religious factions which are now left to run the Middle East will be good for growth and development or not remains to be seen, but it doesn't look promising and these factions will probably keep fighting until there is only one standing.
