H-6 Bomber Aircraft Discussions

For reference, ATB bomber program began in 1979, in 1981 the winning preliminrary design was chosen. it was detailed and worked on until 1989. when the first prototype flew.

So, realistically, if there was already a serious design proposal which got funding at the beginning of this year, it may be there won't be first flight until 2020.

I know you said for reference BUT you cannot compare aircraft development from the US and China. A lot of factors are involve in the lifecycle of any aircraft development. Some planes take longer some take less. Most times it has nothing to do with technical issues but rather political, finance etc.

A few things, although the news now is that they've 'officially' started/approved it now, China likely have worked on it for years although of course for how long & the amount of work done is up for debate.
I certainly have read about it for at least a few years.

In the area of stealth etc, China is working from a higher level today than the US in 79.

if the work started 5 years ago, that is a different matter entirely. I am merely looking at all other available projects, both in the West and in the East, and trying to find such a short development timeframe. I can't find any. Most projects in the west seem to take 5-10 years from the moment a preliminary design is chosen and decision is made to work out the engineering into a detailed project, build prototypes etc.

If the history development rundown on the internet are to be believed, JH7 project took 5 years from the moment it was given green light to the flight of first prototype. J8 project also took 5 years, and that was even earlier, when even the projects in the west took less than they take today. J10 is credited with start of detailed project in 1988, giving 10 years of development before the first flight.

Statstics go against quick development, more so today than 50 years ago. Everything gets protracted, no matter if the issue is engineering, politics or something else. So, IF detailed work started back around mid of 2000s, then I will personally expect the bomber to have its first flight by 2015 or so. But if it started just months ago, I will just relax and not think about it for several more years.

There's many. PLAAF weapons arsenal is probably the one thing they don't have to worry about in terms of diversity.

But the question is: are these all operational ??? ... YES, we've seen several of these Chinese JDAM-equivalents - namely the LT-3 as well as the LS and FT-series - on several air-shows but so far we have not seen any of them on an operational type.

I think the FT-5 and LS-6 are operational. LT-3 might be as well.
