I think "the Reagan is too provocative" is actually just an excuse to keep it back away from land based AShMs.

If, somehow, war suddenly breaks out in the middle of the FONOP (or whatever it is going to be referred to), they don't want to have a carrier sitting not only under the cover of those land based AShMs but also under the S-300s (not that flight ops would really be possible anyways).
The carrier group will never be in any danger, however, knowing the Reagan is coming means the Chinese will find ways to screw with the CSG and win PR points. While most people in the West will not hear about it, all the world leaders will be watching. The U.S. does not want to suffer another humiliation.

Yep even without the risk of open conflict a single CSG being shown buzzed by drones, welcomed by a PLAN CSG and shadowed by a gigantic surface squadron inside the strait would be bad, bad optics.

I noticed a lot of users love discussing soft power, specifically Chinese soft power. So I have started a new thread about it:
Please discuss about it over there. Any attempts to do so here and in any other threads will be deleted since they can go off topic really quickly. Please follow the rules and do not enter childish bickering. Please be respectful to each other as well.

re:american carriers
I read a post on reddit the other day that asked the question "would jet fighters on carriers be used to shoot down missiles" or something along those lines (a navy pilot answered affirmatively but refused to provide other info understandably), and there was an answer that caught my attention.
this guy said that during his deployment on a cvn he was not allowed near certain areas, cause they house EW components: the gist of it was that they are used to fool radars into thinking the carrier is in a certain position, while instead it is a couple of hundred metres elsewhere
are these kinds of EW measures defeated through EW of your own, through better tracking, terminal guidance or something else?

Unless they developed star trek cloaking tech, they cant hide from satellitles and spy drones

I think the guy was hinting at throwing off incoming missiles, not general stealth

I should say that I don't want to derail the thread; it's just that in the context of a possible passage of a us carrier through the strait, this thread popped into my head and I was curious about possible pla countermeasures
