Nah. Trump was much worse. Forever changed US-China relationship because of him. Calling Covid the China virus, Huawei, Meng, etc… all happened under trump. Half of Trump’s inner circle were die hard China Hawks. Every other word coming out of Trump’s mouth was China China China.
A Republican President such as Trump 2024 or worse yet Pompeo would make the relationship much worse.
That’s fair. Trump nuked the supposed “strategic competition” that Obama endorsed and turned it into a classic Great Power competition instead.
This is conjecture. It is the situation today, but I can totally see a scenario where a dying American empire sees Taiwan as the hill it decides to die on.
If you're prepared to fight a nuclear war, why not now? Or as you don't believe China has reached nuclear parity, as soon as they do? It seems pointless to spend the next few years developing your economy and military if the end game is a nuclear reset.
Overall your theory about the future doesn't take into account that countries become more risk adverse as they develop and less risk adverse as they become weaker or collapse. That's exactly what we've seen with Russia/the USSR and what we could see with America.
Yes I totally believe China's military power will eclipse America's in the pacific but that doesn't mean much if America transforms into a suicide bomber state.
Trump would probably escalate and set the stage for a future conflict if it hasn’t already happened before 2025. However, I don’t think it’s likely Trump would actually push for a conflict under his regime. He cares way to much about his legacy and ego for him to risk it all with a fight against China.
If you are South Korean, you can clearly see that US is using Taiwan as a frontline guineapig against China and poking the Dragon. In many ways, US is pressuring South Korea to be a frontline guineapig against China as well, so South Koreans can clearly see the similarities, so "in consideration of our country’s national interest" as South Korean foreign ministry said, South Korea does not want to appear to be welcoming an anti-China shit-stirrer on her victory lap.
