Canada to Consider Other Planes Besides F-35

Canada to consider other fighter gets besides costly F-35

The Associated Press

Canada is considering buying fighter jets other than U.S.-made F-35's because of escalating costs associated with Lockheed Martin's troubled Joint Strike Fighter program, the country's defense minister said Wednesday.

Defense Minister Peter MacKay said the government needs to ensure a balance between military and taxpayer interests.

MacKay said Canada needs to have all viable options on the table to replace the current fleet of 1980s-vintage CF-18s, which the government says will reach the end of their projected service life around 2020.

He reiterated that Canada wants to buy 65 jets for about $9 billion. But escalating costs and delays have dogged the F-35, which is now the most expensive U.S. Department of Defense procurement program ever.

A KPMG report says the lifetime cost of Canada owning 65 F-35's is estimated at $45.8 billion over 42 years.

MacKay had previously said it would buy the F-35, but the government never signed a binding contract. The government has since come under pressure because of ballooning costs and because other bids were not considered. An independent panel will consider a new range of options.

The government acknowledged Wednesday it could still buy the F-35. Other planes that could be considered include Boeing's Super Hornet or the European consortium made Eurofighter Typhoon jet.

Japan has said it may cancel its plans to buy dozens of the F-35s and Australia has said that to cut costs it is pushing back delivery of most of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighters. The Netherlands has also said it will trim its order.

The next-generation fighter is set to become the centerpiece of U.S. and allied air forces. Canada is a funding partner in developing the Joint Strike Fighter. Most of the funding comes from the United States, while Australia, Turkey, Britain, Italy, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands are also funding partners.

IMHO, this is just a rehash of the news article a few posts ago where it was reported that the F-35 for Canada was cancelled and a new tender was going to be made. The Canadian government then followed up with a report indicating it had not been canceled but was being reviewed.

This one seems "new":

F-35 deal scrapped as Conservative government begins new search for fighter jet
OTTAWA—The federal Conservative government has formally pushed “reset” on its search for a new fighter jet after revealing that the Lockheed Martin F-35s they had picked would cost more than $600 million apiece to own and operate over their lifespan.

Battered by opposition criticism, sticker shock and with the sharp critique of the auditor general ringing in their ears, Conservative cabinet ministers confirmed Wednesday that they were starting fresh in their search for a jet to replace aging CF-18 Hornets.

“We have hit the reset button and are taking the time to do a complete assessment of all available aircraft,” Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose told reporters.

Thanks to BHO, the Canucks are trading oil for the J-31, You Heard it from me First! AFB----just a hunch!

and yes I am being somewhat facetious, but why not, BHO really ticked the Canadian PM off, when he refused to allow the keystone pipeline to be built, he also ticked off a great many Americans when he showed his true colors on domestic energy. So many of our partners wonder where we are at? heck many of us are wondering where we are at? Even the bad guys don't know where we are? So no, it really wouldn't surprise me for the Canucks to tell LockMart to take a hike and buy the Eurofighter, should they, no way, even though the F-35 is no Raptor, it will have an advantage over any forth gen or four +++, if and this is a big if, they maintain BVR. and this is another thing, if the A will pull 9.9 gs it will turn with anything out there except the Raptor, and I know its only rated to 9, which for all intents and purposes is a practical limit for the manned operator, and no that doesn't give a UAV the edge. So once you've burn off all that fuel getting to where you are going, you will turn, the helmet mounted sight will be a tremendous advantage, you will more than likely defeat the bad guy and be a hero! Do I blame the Canadians for playing games? Nah not really, but it will cost us, and it already is. Sad AFB

other than getting more super hornets, I really don't know what Canada's other options are. I think this is probably just a pause button to see how F-35 project moves along before purchasing later.

Hornets, Eurofighter Typhoon, F-60, remember you heard it here first. AFB and who wouldn't like an oil for wings deal? I mean really, talk about upsetting the apple cart, I'm afraid the Canucks are really ripped and who could blame them?

The way Canada is. It will only go for American or British options imo. I think typhoon is out of picture because it's probably going to be too expensive. If F-35 is not the option, then it's pretty much down to super hornets and silent eagles imo. Super hornets make the most sense.

Those Canadian politicians are simply too corrupted and my gut feeling that they'd keep selling out the whole country and 30 million Canadians just to deny their roles in this ripoff and the kickbacks they got from the deal.

Those same hypocrites have criticized other countries on accountability and transparency...
