Actually, this is one viewpoint on the F-35, and all of these concerns are legitimate, and weigh into the general OPs of all fighter aircraft. The F-16 is not without its detractors, nor is the F-18, whether or not the Canadians eventually buy the F-35 probably depends more upon politics than the aircraft itself??? So we will have to wait and see, the Aussies, US, and UK are fully committed to buying, building and flying the F-35...... brat

I'm just a layman but ... maybe what's important here is stuff like this:

I mean when talking about "game-changing"

Datalink between various aircraft is old news, even old Mig-31 had those (APD-518) . In modern times many countries upgraded even 4th gen fighters to do the same , one example is Link-16 used in many airforces with Western aircraft.

You cannot realistically expect that airforces without F-35 would not create network to fuse their sensors on various platforms .

one more layman's post here, then :) I was enthusiastic about the F-35 long time ago (ca. 10 years) when I read (and repeated in the pub :) about how for example the airplanes will be net-centric, able to shoot each other's missiles, for example ... similarly I was enthusiastic about the Next Generation Cruiser, for example ... as we all know, several ambitious programs have been delayed/reduced/axed in the meantime ... but I'm sure if they had been finished as and when initially planned, they would have been "game-changing" (I'm not a naysayer and I'm not second-guessing ... or am I? :)

No, you're fine, I've been accused of being a naysayer on our sister forum initially, (MY REAL PISSY BEEF with the F-35, is that it KILLED the LOVELY AND FAR MORE EFFECTIVE, on any level F-22, as the result of some dumb, (well lets just say stupid), dem congressmans ban on its sale abroad, because their was "NO MO PORK", on the Raptor, it wasn't going to pad anyones pockets???? The F-35 was our partners best choice airplane, so we got the ThunderHogge II, the Raptor got "Shanghaied". So no, its open to fair criticism, it does have some issues and has had, they will be worked around, and it will be a very successful front line fighter, and it is already a game changer!

Jura, in my own estimation, both the F-35 and the Zumwalt programs will indeed prove to be "game changers."

Despite the delays, despite the cuts in the Zumwalt program to just three ships.

In both cases, the new technology they bring, and the new policies and operations the allow to be developed, will change the way we look at both naval surface warfare and military aviation in many ways for decades to come.

well, my post was mainly a kind of reaction to a couple of posts by Thud today (or yesterday, I'm not sure now) who, to me, seemed to suggest several "new" features of F-35 could now be achieved by airplanes already in service ... is he right? I don't know! but my point was if the F-35 had entered service as expected (in 2008 according to

True, but none of them has the EOTS to data link with each other like the F-35 who can link to ships (AEGIS destroyers) and mobile launchers as well.

The Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS), another acronym I had to look up :) but I found this interesting article in the process:

No, he is wrong about the F-35, which we can almost consider a 3/4 inch Raptor, not fast, but still very capable, and if operated as intended, it will be very lethal to "any" 3.5 to 4.5 aircraft, and likely to most fifth gens, so called on the up and coming list. Even the Raptor will have to be very sneaky and pull all the tricks out of the bag to defeat the F-35. The F-35 is far more than some "jazzed up" has been, it is a whole new ballgame as far as sensor fusion, and the stealth it has will provide it more "cover" than would be apparent by the numbers, it will be very good.
