re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

A few years ago a A380 had a oil fire in flight on engine #1 the fire caused the fan disk to spin beyond what it was rated for it exploded in air sending titanium fragmentation throughout the entire aircraft. Every A380 had to be grounded and Rolls Royce had to examine the engines. The cause was a slump pipe. A cheap oil line that burst in the engine.

You mean an air busted???? oh brother, don't even get me started on wing root ribs????? or Air France?????? or the Kennedy bird

Brat, My point is a Multi Million dollar Aircraft ($414.4 million US) can be downed by a single part that costs a fraction of a Fraction of a Fraction of the Aircrafts cost. in this case a single hose that was made with a irregular thickness on one side in the Rolls Royce Trent 900 Engine nearly killed the passengers and Crew of Qantas Flight 32 From Shanghai to Sydney. So Grounding the whole fleet for inspection and correction is nothing unique or really a major issue.

Agree completely TerraN this is really nothing to worry about they'll find the issue and remedy it, typical in any program.

ARE YOU SERIOUS ??????? REALLY Well then you better call the USAF, NAVY, MARINES, UK, AUS, CAN, and all the other partners, particularly the partners who are backing away from this little arrangement, I'm sure Linn Martin or whatever the lady president of LockMart, would be glad to hear that you have completely reassured everyone that this is nothing unique, (I know F-35s burn up all the time????)

Jr, this is burning serious money, and more importantly it is burning confidence and sales receipts for the F-35, I've been around long enough to "know" how these things work out in real life. We have 100 airplanes sitting on the ground, along with how many civilian and military support staff and pilots doing "what"?????? drawing pay????????

but your confidence will make them all feel better, sorry but you ought to know the brat never overeacts to trivial non-sense, but this is A BIG DEAL!

NOT to mention the Krap Storm this will cause at Farnborough!

Negotiations for the signing of the LRIP 8 contract are suspended until the problem and its implications are fully explained, Jane's reports.

Most all major engineering programs have some sort of issue along the way its part of developing new equipment.

The F-16 had engines with compressor issues and the F-15 had engine fires and buffeting issues, again its just part of the game.

As for Farnborough I'm sure something will be sorted out, my guess a USMC F-35B will be flying.

I doubt you can link to Jane's, but can you quote and cite? From my research LRIP 8 has already been awarded

The kind of problems you're thinking about are SOP, but this airplane has had a Very Troubled path. This is yet another crisis, it will be The Topic of day at Farnborough, selling airplanes requires confidence, in you, but far more importantly, in your aircraft.

The F-35 is a large program so of course its had its share of issues but again like I was pointing out so has every major weapon system or engineering project, its part of engineering. Take a closer look at other fighters/systems and you'll see all had teething issues just like the F-35.

In my opinion the F-35 is such a big program and is taking such a large chunk of the defense budget of course people are going to be critical of it and some even want it to fail. There is nothing wrong with criticism it tends to light fires under engineers butts so they can make sure there aren't any under the pilots :D.

At the end of the day the F-35 will be an amazing fighter and with a few production issues ironed out it will be affordable to procure as well as sustain.
